Re: CSX Train Location Updates - May 2024

Train makeup didn't allow for a shove up the hill either. Is this because of the tank cars on the tail end? U302-26 thru WE Brighton at 11:42 with 114 cars. ZVBX 625768, 321575, 97026, 625752, 18021, and 625761 in the mix, some interesting graffiti on those tanks too. If there are Hazardous cars on...

Re: Shunt enhancement - success?

You have to remember, the point of contact between a train’s wheel and the head of the rail is only about the size of a dime. Not a lot of contact when you think about it, especially on something as short as a passenger train.

Thanks, Tom. You’re right, shorting/interrupting the circuit is a better definition.

Re: UP’s Big Boy Stand Alone PTC

It can, but I would bet it won't, other than on short runs. The UP Steam Crew has stated numerous times that the diesel (in this case, the usual SD70M #4015) will always be tagging along. The diesel helps stretch out the Big Boy's fuel and water supply by helping out with the load. They also use it ...

Re: Shunt enhancement - success?

Excuse me, but what is "shunt enhancement"? I am not a signal guy, so my definition is probably crude, so bear with me. Shunt is basically the act of a locomotive and or rail car completing (shunting) the circuit in a section of signaled track to show occupancy. Signal systems are divided more or l...

Re: Shunt enhancement - success?

Boy, they just will NOT let go of that idiotic connection between the CSX and the MI Line. How much time would that really save, 3 minutes?

Re: CSX Locomotive Roster News, Updates & Information Thread

Per a post on Facebook, it appears CSX has retired and sold all of the remaining MP15 variants, as well as what appeared to be most of the remaining RDMTs and some of the MATEs as well.

Sometime after that, they changed the Saginaw Sub to be Saginaw (and later, Flint) to Carleton and the Toledo Terminal Sub was extended from Alexis up to Carleton.

There was a bit of time somewhere between 2006 and 2008 that D700 was based in Holland, and started their work going west, ending up in Holland for the night.
Right you are. IIRC they also tried that for a bit in the 2019-2020 era as well.

Re: The local currently known as L301

L301, formerly D700, is advertised to run from Grand Rapids to Sawyer and back. It used to be advertised all the way to New Buffalo, and was the highest paying job on the Chicago Division due to the mileage ran and the kind of service the pay rate dictated (road switcher). Yes, they handle all of th...

Re: Michigan Rail business news redux

Track work is underway at the former sand plant in Livingston on CSX. The new business is supposed to be doing something with cement by rail. Will be some more work for L301. Heinz in Holland on the CSX Dock Track just got the contract to make sauce for Taco Bell, should be seeing more boxcars of to...
