Re: Quiet Zones - Curious to hear your thoughts!

As long as the crossings are set up properly with full width gates, center baricades and signage, it is fairly safe. Just dont cross when the gates are down just like any other crossing! Pay attention and be aware of your surroundings, horn or no horn! There are certain exceptions when we are allowe...

Re: Wyoming Yard: D707, Y106, Y290 - SD50-2s Abound

The SD50-2 looks like it has an air box filter but if its a true 50 it will be turbo charged and not need one. Anyone know they story about the box? I'm not sure, but I think there are two types of SD50-2s on CSX, some born/upgraded that way and some downgraded? They both come from very different n...

I haven't seen a single one. I am going to jab my eyes out with a cactus when I see one. I am so sick and tired of every other message being about them. To the torch!

Re: GLC 385

If those darn UP guys would turn off the headlight when they are stopped they wouldn't have that problem I was thinking the same thing. Those guys out west must be scared of the dark or something. Practice Safe CSX You're right. I shouldn't get out of the cab unless the headlight is extinguished. G...

Re: GLC 385

I prefer high headlights. As far as visibility goes, ditch lights are winner winner chicken dinner. Headlights alone, whether low or high mounted don't offer the greatest visibility. What I dislike about nose mounted headlights is not the possibility of getting burned (I've never had this problem --...

Re: GLC horns

From what I've been told in the past is eastern railroads (Conrail/NS, CSX etc) have flashing ditch lights to attract attention to the train as Tops said. I believe Eastern roads did this because they often went through highly populated areas, where as western roads typically go through more open l...

Re: "Track Defect"

When a "broken" rail is removed from service. What exactly is broken and how did the break occur? :? When a broken rail is removed from service?? It is usually just fixed, not sure what you meant by that statement. Any part of the rail can break, and any number of reasons can cause it. The head can...

Re: GLC horns

With NS's, if you meet a train at or near a road crossing, you can swap the ditch lights to flash on the long hood end so you don't blind the other crew. With CSX's, you don't have that option...they flash until they time out.

Re: "Track Defect"

Seems to me that rail flexing up and down would eventually break from the constant flexing. Take a piece of steel and keep bending it back and forth, and see what happens. Yeah, I know it's a big steel rail. But the same principals apply. Slim chance this ever did happen but if it did, CTC would dr...

Re: GLC horns

That's right, they did! Now that you mention it, so do IHB's. We have a regular leaser that hangs around the Bloomington/Villa Grove area commonly, GMTX 2687 (ex-LLPX 2020 / CSXT 9667 / CSXT 2001 / B&O 3801) that the ditch lights flash continuously whenever the engine is in either forward or reverse.

Re: GLC horns

Now for extra points: How come 385s ditch lights flash with the horn, and 395 and 396s don't? I too have wondered about ditch lights, my two questions are 1) why western roads (UP, KCS, and BNSF units) tend to prefer ditch lights stay solid (and vice versa on the eastern roads (CSX, NS) tend to pre...

Re: Track Defect

Ties really don't even need to be replaced, just needs tamping. Doesn't even appear to be a slow order on it as the train is moving right along close to 50. Not a defect, just a soft spot; they pop up all over the place when it rains, melting snow, etc. The bad ones get slow orders until they're fix...
