Re: My first Railfanning Mistake.

Back in the 80's my friend Scott and I got to know the afternoon yard master and crew at Botsford pretty well. As long as we stayed off the track and off the equipment we could hang around the yard and on weekends could usually ride out to Kilgore with them. The conductor and brakeman were old Penns...

Re: Where Is It?

While most of that is correct JT, the interurban line in the pic does not run between GR and Kalamazoo - the freight railroad does. Interurban runs more east/west. That leaves the NYC (Kalamazoo-Grand Rapids) and Michigan United (Battle Creek-Allegan) crossing near Allegan. Not Allegan - it's actua...

Re: Amtrak Wolverine Full Service Resuming?

Will the state have the money to fund the return to six trains? They tried to paint a rosy picture in the news saying the budget was coming in $1.2B better than expected, that was after forecasting a $3.5B short fall earlier in the year. Unless Uncle Sam keeps bank rolling everyone the state will ha...

Re: Amtrak's Goals

30 new routes where future generations of tax payers will foot the bill to subsidize competing modes of transportation. So I gather you're ok with also cutting subsidies to roads, buses, airports, seaports and canal locks? Fuel taxes alone don't begin to cover the full cost of maintaining highways....

There is only one legitimate option: buy the Pere Marquette.
Why buy the PM when you can rent space from Watco or G&W after they take over?

Re: Third Rail on NS in Goshen Causing Problems.

Most of the time the crossings are kept clear. There are times where that is not possible. At present railroads enjoy protection from enforcement of limits on blocking crossings with federal courts ruling local restrictions do not allow enough time for railroads to perform necessary (federally requ...

The inspector had an 1886 version of this page. https://www.loc.gov/resource/g4114nm.g0 ... 84,1.096,0 Our building was built in 1912 and shows up in the 1921 map. It's interesting the things that used to be.

Old Railroad Names in Newaygo.

A few weeks ago I had to search for surveys on some property my employer is selling. One of the descriptions refered to bordering on the Grand Rapids, Newaygo and Lakeshore right of way. All of the surveys go back to a "RR Right of Way Stake" in a patch of woods along the river Yesterday the environ...

US-31 just northeast of Grissom Joint Air Reserve Base in Miami County, IN. IN Hwy. 218 jog with US-31.
Yes it is. Gus Grissom was the pilot on the right. The Grissom Air Museum is next to the overpass. It includes a B47 and C117.

Re: Where Is It?

Somewhere near the Wright Patterson Air Force Base, northeast of Dayton, OH. Not Wright Patterson but the right idea. No aviation fans or movie buffs? Capt Lappo flew a B47 variant under the Mackinac Bridge in 1959. Jimmy Stewart pilots a B47 in Strategic Air Command. In a later movie he pilots a C...

In the Kalamazoo area? Not Kalamazoo, in fact not Michigan. Rather than relying on guesses to zero in on the location I am going to go with Air Force pilots. On the left Muskegon native Lt Col John Lappo. He began is career with the Army Air Corps in WWII. Flew B29's in Korea and ended his Air Forc...

Note the Penn Central logo. Nearby is a different kind of "boxcar" constructed of mostly aluminum.
