Re: Ashcor to reclaim ash at Campbell
https://golddiscovery.com/news/730601-acoxca-ashcor-and-consumers-energy-announce-coal-ash-remediation-at-jh-campbell-power-plant Interesting news. I wonder if they'll truck it all or ship by rail. Given that they plan to be at this for a good chunk of time I would say both, but they would send the...

Re: CSX Locomotive Roster News, Updates & Information Thread
All of the older 7600-7900 & 9000 series GE units that had been reactivated a few years ago after years in storage, have now been ordered back into storage, perhaps forever as most of these are nearing 30 years old. Only a few currently show still working, but most all of these show "off line" to o...

Better bring a book of magazine. You'll see nothing but track and that's it in Grand Rapids. Better off going to Ohio and Indiana to the ex B&O line. You'll see plenty of CSX there. You might even see some cool trains. CSX in Michigan is a pain in the butt You’re so helpful, aren’t you? Dalek...

Dave, they still put the imprinted code on the rail - it’s on the other side from the printed marks, because yes the printed marks will fade with time. But at the very least the paint marks indicate the rail is 115RE section from Steel Dynamics in Columbia City, IN. The rest of it should be a batch/...

Last night’s 355 was cancelled due to a derailment at Pine Junction. Apparently an ethanol put 4 rear cars on the ground and caught fire. 355 was pronounced cancelled at Porter Junction. If I recall, it left Pontiac on time last night. Where is Pine Junction? And today 350 was cancelled very early ...

I recommend, if your scanner allows for it, plug all of the AAR frequencies in and just scan them all. That way you don’t have to care about what’s in use at any particular location.

So glad to be moving beyond Phase V and Phase IVb. This receding era will come to be known as the dark ages for Amtrak liveries!

Re: ELS Auto Collision near Escanaba
Whether they’d take action is obviously to be determined, I don’t think it would end like how the BNGR got shut down in Oklahoma this year, but if things continue like this, some sort of FRA involvement/fines toward the E&LS seem likely. The BNGR situation was a lot different than just a railroad h...

The RN is gonna love not having to give trains EC1s on the main, even if it is only a handful of trains daily.

Re: New Route to South Bend Airport for South Shore.
Good news and bad news. I will miss the side of the road, interurban type running today to reach the airport along Bendix Drive and the use of the former Northern Indiana Railway Michigan CIty line alignment into South Bend on Westmoor Street. Nobody will miss the restricted speed running and the t...

Re: New Route to South Bend Airport for South Shore.
So will the current easement off the original south shore main be abandoned or left in place for a potential emergency route into the airport and/or any potential freight development? TBD. Most likely removed, but there's always a chance CSS decides they want it for rail service. The original mainl...

Re: Michigan City Coaling Tower to be demolished in 2025
As long as steel and concrete contract and expand at the same rate when heated and cooled there should be no problems. :) True, this definitely helps. But there are still differences between the superstructure and substructure to contend with also, as well as different heating rates for exposed ste...

Re: Michigan City Coaling Tower to be demolished in 2025
In pre-computer days, so many pieces of infrastructure were simply over engineered. Bridges, tunnels, viaducts, etc. were simply built bigger and stronger than they ever needed to be. I assume coal tower were similar. Moreso was the lack of knowledge of how the materials interacted and would handle...

Plenty of people have proven that you can have fences, lights, gates, train horns, channelization of pedestrian flow, and any number of additional safeguards - and they'll still get hit, whether in a car or on foot.

The Metra cars were available because Metra is still not back to their pre-Covid capacity and likely never will be. Sorta. This plan was in the works even before COVID. Metra ordered too many cars because they expected ridership growth. Instead, they got a slow decline. So even with pre-pandemic ri...

Re: Michigan City Coaling Tower to be demolished in 2025
A major problem with many of these towers is that they’re very early examples of steel reinforced concrete. The use of this material was still relatively new and engineers had only limited knowledge on how they would perform. As such, many are actually way overfilled with rebar, and many also lack d...
