LEDs have certainly helped with power consumption. Railroads do seem to be standardizing on all lit signals (except when a signal is approach lit and dark when no train is present). There are only a couple lines I have noticed that still use "dark" as part of an aspect. I'm not sure why they didn't...

Red over Dark over Dark may be valid in their rule book (STOP unless there is a number plate making the signal an intermediate.) Amtrak P370-05 @ 22:35:15 eastward Bangor's Division St crossing mp CG60.93 with IDTX engine #4609 & 3 SuperLiners (8 passengers Off at the station mp CG60.5) Any idea how they lost over 45 minutes between St Joseph and Bangor? Hy-railing yesterday - about 100 miles - we almost hit half a dozen turkeys, a few deer, and a pair of woodchucks.

We rescued a massive 14" snapping turtle from the tracks on Wednesday, too.

Based on the various carcasses and bone piles along the line, not everything makes it!
