Re: Amtrak 355 accident-New Buffalo

Instead, the overly expedited attempt at saving a replaceable vehicle greatly multiplied the damage and resulted in injuries and potentially, far worse. It is quite shameful the disregard to safety displayed at the scene. There are several things mentioned in your post that I think need to be addre...

Re: Amtrak 355 accident-New Buffalo

I've heard more on the story that Amtrak was never contacted although police apparently said they were. I think there needs to be more education for people to use that 1-800# versus waiting on PD or other agencies to make the call. I'm not narking on anyone because I believe that tow truck driver a...

Gotcha. Did the Via units ever make it across the border when they ran the international? Or did they power swap for Amtrak in Port Huron? How did that work before 911?
Both trainsets went all the way, in a true pooled equipment setup.

Re: Plymouth & GR sub-div Work

Not certain if it is a railroad by railroad or FRA thing, but usually for a mainline switch in signal territory either a dwarf “come-out” signal or an electric switch lock is required. Many places prefer the signal so as to minimize the moveable parts that need to be maintained and tested. At the ra...

Re: Plymouth & GR sub-div Work

The new satellite dishes at the old CTC locations seem to suggest that they're retiring the codeline in favor of satellite communications with the backoffice, but potentially keeping the signal system itself the same. Theoretically it's just changing the method of communication, with some components...

Re: CN South Bend/Flint Sub

Nick, trying to inflate the train count numbers in your head does nothing to change the number of trains actually running that you can possibly see. Coming up with a higher number does nothing. I see this all the time in this hobby. For some reason people want to inflate the counts as if it actuall...

I was in East Lansing from 11 am until 5 pm today, and during that time CN ran a total of 6 trains. 6.
Perfect for a 24 hour average of about 24 trains. Sounds reasonable given all that has been stated here.

Re: Plymouth & GR sub-div Work

That “switch machine” is simply a switch point detector, with the rod connecting to the near point so the signal system can detect an open switch. It’s a good indication of continuing signal coverage, but it is not a switch machine, and those are not installed with power switches, as those include t...

Re: Crossing information spreadsheet

Can you give some examples of the inaccuracies so we know what to be on the lookout for? Or is it just generally outdated or something else? The database relies on railroad managers to keep the data current - not often a top priority - so a lot of stuff is out of date. Also not a high level of accu...

Re: Trains in the midwest/west

I promise you that they are not cramming 60 trains a day on the Northern Transcon. The largely single-track route simply wouldn’t be able to handle it. Keep in mind a fair number of trains also run via the Northern Pacific/Montana Rail Link route, instead of the Great Northern. 30ish per day is a so...

Marias Pass. You will not be disappointed.

How many trains would you say on average? More then 35+
Should be right around the 30-40 range, but the pass is a great place to chase so you'll have no problem staying busy.
