Re: Most recent "new" railroad

In the Upper Peninsula, the joint LS&I-CNW-SOO line from Ishpeming to east of Negaunee was constructed in 1965, combining all three railroads through the area and avoiding increasing mine subsidence issues. The new line was/is about 5.5 miles long and built to high standard through the hills.

Re: Future of the Plymouth Sub/Grand Rapids Sub

What is fascinating is the fact, that other than Typhoon and SD80mac, none of you really have a clue as to what you are even talking about. You are all guessing and uneducated guessing at best. They're all making statements as if the GR and Plymouth Subs aren't among CSX's densest local traffic lin...

Fowlerville - Asahi Kasei Plastics - 45 cars on the tracks. How many are simply used as storage and how many do they normally get in and out? All of the cars are "in service", but there are some definitely being stored on site awaiting unloading. They are also super particular about what spot each ...

Re: Future of the Plymouth Sub/Grand Rapids Sub

Sidebar: when Plascore had their new siding installed in 2007 it cost $600,000 which included a hefty payment to CSX for cutting into the main line. I can only imagine what the cost is for Coastal Containers new siding. I work for a commercial design-build firm, we just finished a large warehouse p...

Re: Michigan State Representative Brian Begole to host a fall tour trip between Owosso and Alma with 1225

Good, maybe he'll ask why the hell are there so many slow orders on the Cadillac district, and GLC doesn't seem to want to spend any of there money on ties or rail. The state contract reads that the operating railroad is to spend 20 to 25% of its earnings on general track maintenance!!! Instead the...

Re: South Shore Double Track

West Lake is not designed for Amtrak's trains. High level platforms and no gauntlets that Amtrak would need to pass slowly. The Amtrak equipment should have no issue fitting by the high-level platforms, they are industry standard. The Chicago Line is the best route around the south side of the lake...

Re: South Shore Double Track

I thought I read somewhere that there is now a connecting track between the SSL and Amtrak line from MI. Is there plans to move Amtrak to the SSL to access Chicago? That connection has been there forever. It goes via the NIPSCO yard and was originally the interchange point between the Monon and SSL...

Re: Pending rail car retirements, high scrap rates tighten equipment market

As far as I know it can be over 50 years old but can not be interchanged to other railroads it has to stay on home rails but I am very surprised to see the scrap tie gons for GLC from CSX some of those where built in the 60s and have the old Reading RR name on them and a few ex NYC ones also I don'...

Re: UP Mines Question

It seems that the covered gondolas also go east across the U.P. I've seen the gons in trains in Green Bay and Lansing, MI. Seems like the long way around to get to Sudbury. How many of the gons are there? Nickel and Copper gons for Sudbury go east via the Sault Meanwhile, the gons going towards Ont...

Re: South Shore Double Track

Miller is major part of the project. The final station will be as good as (if not better than) any other station along the line. It will definitely be a rival to Dune Park in this respect, and a fitting eastern terminus for the short-haul 200 series trains. The Add-Track at Gary Metro is a pain by ...

Re: D&M / LSRC Stone Operations

Is flyash a byproduct of the steel making process? Seems like many years ago I had a customer on Zug Island in Detroit that received flyash from one of the local steel mills. Flyash is from burning coal. They probably got it from a sub-process of steelmaking, but not from the steelmaking process it...

Re: D&M / LSRC Stone Operations

The LSRC still shipped in gypsum to the LaFarge plant in Alpena until around 10 years ago. Not sure exactly where it came from. Ultimately, my understanding is that the use of flyash eventually pushed out the gypsum in cement making. I wonder if gypsum may make a comeback with the decline of flyash...

12:27 CT: Eastbound loaded coal by Hammond, IN. BNSF 5646 leading. Conductor’s side has a lot of primer doors and such on it - ugly duckling.

Should be a train for West Olive.
