Re: South Shore in Hammond

4534 Homan St?

It has been a couple months since I went through there. I can't remember if it was still there or not. There was major construction in the area for the street rebuilding.

Re: Butler Indiana diamond NS

Both of the crossings are in the FRA database as "public". There are three separate property owners southeast of the diamond. The "street" is on NS (Norfolk & Western) ROW on that side of the tracks. NS also owns the wooded area to the south of Erie St southwest of the diamond.

Re: High level platforms

The Amtrak station in Grand Rapids has a high-level platform. It is on a stub so it isn’t a clearance issue for freight trains. I use high level to mean platform height at car floor height. It looks like a step box needs to be used there? I am surprised that they didn't put the platform high enough...

Re: High level platforms

That will leave Carroll and Gary as the only two low level regular stations, Carroll will be closing when 11th St reopens downtown. So that leaves Gary as the only full service station without a high level platform when the double track project completes (and I wonder about the future of that stati...

Re: Conrail fatal crossing accident on the eastside

The picture of the engine across the road is on a one way street, which would be the middle of the three crossings (Kercheval Ave). With photos in the story of the car after the train was pulled away it is possible that the train was moved back from where it stopped to where it is shown blocking Ker...

Re: Plymouth Sub Signal Update Thread

LEDs have certainly helped with power consumption. Railroads do seem to be standardizing on all lit signals (except when a signal is approach lit and dark when no train is present). There are only a couple lines I have noticed that still use "dark" as part of an aspect. I'm not sure why they didn't ...

Re: Plymouth Sub Signal Update Thread

Red over Dark over Dark may be valid in their rule book (STOP unless there is a number plate making the signal an intermediate.)

Most railroads will have at least two reds at absolutes (just in case a head burns out) but a single red at the top is a valid aspect in most of the rule books I have read.

Re: 110mph for Kzoo-Albion, restoring another Wolverine round trip

I think the original poster meant 79, not 59. 79mph is the maximum authorized speed you can do without some sort of PTC. Current Law: On and after January 17, 2012, where a passenger train is permitted to operate at a speed of 60 or more miles per hour, or a freight train is permitted to operate at...

Perhaps the drivers in South Bend / Mishawaka are voting against their quiet zone?

There's no horse here to even beat.
And yet the flogging continues.

Just be happy that the 110mph exists.

Re: 110mph for Kzoo-Albion, restoring another Wolverine round trip

How many states own any line? Michigan owns 665 miles including the 135 mile former NS line Amtrak maintains.
Although funded by the state, NICTD owns the South Shore line (a municipal corporation). Max speed 79 MPH.
There is probably a long list of similar "commuter" operations that don't top 79 MPH.

Re: Amtrak vs. Vehicle in Mishawaka: 1 Dead.

"A crossing activation failure". Words no maintainer wants to read. Hopefully we will get more information on this incident in the coming days. South Bend is a quiet zone so drivers do not have the benefit of trains blowing for every approaching crossing.

Maybe the defect detector is defective.
That'd be a job for the defect detector defect detector, aka a signal maintainer
Technicnaly the defect detector defect detector could be a train crew. The repair guy would be a maintainer. :D

Re: My first Railfanning Mistake.

There is a difference between a flood light on one's own property and a flood light covering a neighbor's property. Where I work we put in new parking lot lights and the zoning specifically stated that the bulbs could not be seen off of our property. The approval given was to fully light OUR propert...

The city police are usually good at moving any troublemakers along. Otherwise people watching the trains go by are just people, regardless of their home address or lack thereof. There is a large homeless shelter and halfway houses on the south side of the tracks near where you will see people trespa...

Re: Ford Motor Vehicle Train Deliveries from Oakville, Ontario

CN and CP would likely haul the vehicles from Oakville to Vancouver unless their contract stated otherwise. I would not consider Vancouver to be the default destination for Canadian built US sold vehicles. CN/GTW to Chicago and then switched wherever they need to go for delivery. Unless stated othe...

Re: Ford Motor Vehicle Train Deliveries from Oakville, Ontario

Fortunately whether the cars crossed at Port Huron or Detroit or crossed by tunnel or boat they still crossed from Ontario to Michigan. Only a route through Buffalo would change that answer to the question of "what state ?". Oakville is far enough east (nearToronto) that Buffalo would not be too far...

Re: CSX bridge over Ann Arbor Rd. in Plymouth Township

The railroads seem to care only about "structurally sound" these days. The actual appearance of the bridge doesn't matter. If a city or town complains they may be offered the opportunity to paint the bridge within the railroad's standards. But if the paint isn't needed to keep the bridge structurall...

"I need to know into which state the vehicle on the rail car first “touched” US soil." Where did the truck touch US soil or where did the train touch US soil? I suppose it is an interesting piece of trivia where one's classic vehicle entered the country but built for sale in the US (not originally s...
