Re: NS interchange with CN Lansing?

That volume of “traffic” (centerbeams which are in storage?) is not typical of the interchange between CN and JAIL. If you search this message board for “Hollow” you’ll find many pages of entries discussing this small yard and interchange activities there. Yeah, it's pretty infrequent. But still ge...

Hello this is GRHC from the present and I would like to know if the interchange talked about in the above post is still active now that the Jackson and Lansing railroad has taken over the line.
It is!

Here's a great picture of it in action.

Re: Derailment in Springfield, OH Today.

In my opinion, the FRA needs to shut NS' operations down until they can make new safety practices that the FRA can agree upon, and if the regulator doesn't like it, nothing moves on that railroad until the regulator is satisfied. Here's why: NS at this point is a threat to public safety with all of...

The media circus and political sideshow around this cleanup are mind boggling.
Seriously, nobody reporting on this knows anything about trains.

Worried this will push freight off the rails and onto the roads. Which is even more dangerous.

New Metra Strategic Plan

Metra has developed a new 5 year plan that addresses ridership changes based on the impact of the pandemic. Most importantly in my opinion, they're looking to transfer to a more regional rail style service than traditional commuter rail. This is in response to a faster recovery in off-peak, reverse-...

Re: South Shore Double Track

Is there a particular reason for having the platform--track--platform--track station layout? Not a layout you see very much. Thinking about Hammond, Hegewisch and now Michigan City. The only reasoning I can think is it has to do with platform width and existing track spacing? But if they're building...

Scheduling, at least to a much better degree than there is today, would be very doable with proper infrastructure investment to insure minimal delays and the sort.

Re: East Palestine, Ohio Major NS Derailment

Everybody who signs up for railroading knows that unpredictable working hours and forced overtime are part of the gig. As has been pointed out before, you trade your time for a pile of cash. It has literally always been that way - and essentially has to be that way given the 24/7 nature of the indu...

Re: East Palestine, Ohio Major NS Derailment

Railroaders love being miserable. They'll complain all day about how much their job sucks and they should get paid more, but ultimately they almost never leave. Funny enough most stay because they know its the best pay + benefits + retirement they'll likely ever find. People really whip each other ...

Re: East Palestine, Ohio Major NS Derailment

No, but the class 1's are pretty stupid. Personally just what I've learned (not an expert obviously). Is that the class 1's want the highest operating ratio because money. This has lead to ever decreasing numbers of workers, which means remaining crews are worked harder for longer, increasing chanc...

Re: Study Time....again - A2TC commuter rail project

Well, fortunately, we're not talking about Climate Change, we're talking about a mis-guided boondoggle connecting two points by rail that have no reason to be connected. Increase frequency and up the speeds on our existing passenger routes before we dump millions of tax payer dollars into "studies"...
