Knowing the roads would be the most important...what shortcuts to take, how to get around the train so you’re not stuck waiting for it, etc.

Depends on the direction of the train, the size of the train, the type of train, etc. Also depends on how frequently you want to photograph the train and how well you know the roads, not to mention how willing you are to exceed the speed limit.
@ Jetlink « Thu 10:23:09 am »
I would say you can chase trains on the GR subdivion. You just have to be strategic and/or plan your encounters farther apart. Also the scanner is very much your friend. And not an online scanner. A real hand held one.

chasing from say Saugatuck area down to Hartford isn’t the easiest, unless you hop on the highway or drive like JT :) Other sections you can get ahead of them easier. Not like chasing a 10-20mph shortline train, that’s for sure.
@ David Collins « Thu 9:52:19 am »
for the longest time some of my non-railfan friends thought chasing trains meant chasing them on foot for some reason 🗿

that depends on if you’re chasing them on foot or if you’re in a vehicle if you’re on foot you’re SOL if you’re in a vehicle yeah I think you could.

i hear you on that one JT. Fell near the end of the season in track as I was tripped from behind when running during practice. Skid on the rough track surface, both knees and hands were bleeding bad. So not just the running joint pain, but skin skids too :)

Running is a great excersize. Unlike cycling, it is load bearing. So very good for you.

did track in 6th/7th grade too, never have been a distance runner myself so I ran the 70 and 100m dashes
@ ~Z~ « Wed 9:30:15 am »
sort of. Ran track and field in 6th and 7th grade, 1/2 mile run was the main one I did. Then got into tennis in 8th grade and did that instead.

he ran in 13:38. Previous was 14:06. This last run was at a golf course up in Gowen MI. Usually it's at a school with ample parking lot spaces, but they directed everyone to park out off the fairways on the course grounds. Some hilly terrain to run, some single track, cool place. Golf course ran along the old PM Railroad ROW between Greenville and Howard City.

I was tracking a helicopter and provided a link so others could track it but then it landed at the airport so I wrote never mind. It had nothing to do the fact that you edited and then removed one of my post. I think that’s what you thought I was referring to but I could be wrong.

the 129th Ave crossing, I was having trouble finding the angle to start recording if I waited a bit longer for the train 😕

I have to thank the cars for giving a cool breeze while I waited for 45 minutes tho

I wish there were a better train watching hotspot on the weekends closer to where I live unfortunately there’s not. So I would definitely have to travel a ways in order to go to one of those gatherings. Unfortunately I don’t have a lot of time in the summer to do a whole lot of anything but work. Oh and that reminds me this needs to be brought to peoples attention. 😏
