CP Rail AC4400CW #8531Canadian Pacific #8531 leads eastbound train X500 through the crossovers at Lamar, at the west end of Grand Rapids' Wyoming Yard. The train had 51 cars upon arrival at Wyoming Yard, and they picked up 4 boxcars of GM autoparts before departing toward Detroit and Canada. May 16, 2009.GP30M4216

CW44AC #581A pair of fine looking CW44AC's are at the headend of loaded coal train N888, with number 581 in the lead. This train is tied down at Ivanrest Road, just west of Wyoming Yard, waiting for a new crew to bring it west to the Consumers Energy plant at Port Sheldon. The eastbound signal 4.7 is visible on the other main train - rumor has it once the CSX signal replacement project which has been working east on the Grand Rapids Subdivision gets to Wyoming Yard, major changes will take place. For now, C&O colors look right at home by this C&O/PM signal. August 17, 2011.GP30M4216

Soo Line SD60 #6031 with X500The last CP Rail X500 I saw on CSX was a fitting one, looking more like one of the earlier-era Soo Line trains I remember as a young kid than the more modern versions with wide cab beavers leading the way. Here, hockey-stick SD60 #6031 leads Candy Apple sister #6054 east passing the west-end switcher at Lamar, entering Grand Rapids' Wyoming Yard with 75 cars. The X500s would be gone from CSX by the end of the month. August 8, 2010.GP30M4216

Chessie System #903101Wyoming Yard local Y194, with GP38-2 #2659 and GP15T #1514 for power, has just picked up the UPFE/ARMN 57' mechanical reefer ahead of the caboose in this photo, and is now running westbound down the main to run around their train on the Service Track. This yard job has been switching out customers around Wyoming Yard, and presently has four other 50' boxcars in addition to the reefer. Bringing up the rear is a familiar Wyoming Yard sight: Chessie System wide-vision caboose #903101, a former C&O car. Note the ghosting of the end stripes on the roof over the end platform. CSX CW44AC #486 with D801Consecutively numbered CW44ACs #486 and #487 pass the vintage searchlight signals at Ivanrest, in Grandville, MI. They are working as D801, proceeding to West Olive, MI to pick up empty coal hoppers. They are passing a long line of stored autorack multilevels - a sign of the times, which are currently being stored on the main track between Grandville and Lamar. Behind the signal bungalow, another string of stored gondolas are also being stored on the Reefer Track. 5-16-2009 GP30M4216

MP15AC #1177A familiar sight around Wyoming Yard for several years was MP15AC #1177, which was normally assigned to work switching moves. This day, it is teamed up with RCPHG4 #9247 as they switch out a long cut of cars at Wyoming Yard, just west of Grand Rapids. November 12, 2005.GP30M4216

CSX C40-8 #7513Standard Cab C40-8 #7513 leads a set of matched Scheme 6 paint power east under the landmark cantilever signal with train Q326-22 at Godfrey Street in Grand Rapids. A close examination of this photo will reveal there are in actuality almost as many locomotives (4) as there are freight cars (6) in this consist. The pair of Geeps are just along for the ride today and will likely be setoff as local/yard power at Ensel in Lansing. This cantilever signal is of a Pere Marquette design, and is the only one of this type in west Michigan. March 22, 2008.GP30M4216

CSX GP38-2 #2738Manifest Q326 departs Grand Rapids' Wyoming Yard near Godfrey Street, heading east for Detroit. The power is shown passing the home dwarf signal for the east end of track Old 17, often used as a storage siding. Despite the number of locomotives on the headend this day, the train was rather short, and only the pair of GE C40-8s were actually running. The GP38-2 #2738/GP40-2 #6133 combo are likely destined for setoff at Lansing's Ensel Yard. March 22, 2008.GP30M4216

Soo Line SD60 #6031Soo Line SD60s #6031 and #6054 lead a 75 car X500-08 east near Hudsonville, MI, on the Grand Rapids Subdivision. A pair of Soo Line SD60s was lucky this day and harkens back to the earlier day of CP Rail/Soo Line run through trains across Michigan in the late 1980s and the 1990s. X500 is the last of these trains to remain on CSX, and it is scheduled to move to an NS routing by the end of the month. Late summer color and still-active code line add to the scene. August 8, 2010. Rail Train Y171Continuous Welded Rail Train Y171 carefully negotiates the crossovers at Lamar as it backs the rail laying train onto the main track. Once past the eastward absolute signal, they will proceed east on the main (closest) track, laying new rail along the way. This is part of a massive infrastructure renewal project which is slowly rebuilding many portions of the Porter, IN-Detroit, MI former Pere Marquette mainline. April 14, 2008.GP30M4216

Rail Train Y171Both locomotives pictured once wore the Chessie cat. GP30 Road Slug #2246 began in a similar blue scheme (with a bit less yellow) as B&O #6913. GP40-2 #6458 began as a B&O locomotive too, their #4444, but was delivered with the tri-color Chessie cat paint scheme. Both are now semi-permanently coupled as a Road Slug pair. They are backing rail train Y171 through the switches at the west end of Grand Rapids' Wyoming Yard. April 14, 2008GP30M4216
