Racing the sunsetAfter receiving the clear signal at the CSX diamond in Hamler, a southbound I&O freight led by NYSW SD70M 4054 heads south toward Lima in the last light of a March 2004 day. With the departure of the NYSW SD70M's to the FEC and the (presumed) arrival of FEC SD40-2's another chapter of the variety of power on the former DT&I is about to be written.MSchwiebert

Heading South..THe NYSW SD70m's that have called the former DT&I home for the last several years are turning out to have quite the vagabond existence. Their time spent on the "home road" turned out to be rather short. With their stint on the former DT&I coming to a close, and their departure to the Florida East Coast in process, here's a look back at #4054 leading a southbound on CSX trackage rights @ Columbus Grove OH on a brilliant September 2003 Afternoon.MSchwiebert

Hitting the diamondAn everyday occurance on the former DT&I during the Grand Trunk era was the NS run-through trains that traversed the line as part of a Port Huron to Atlanta routing. On a sunny December 1995 afternoon a southbound is just about to hit the diamond at Hamler.MSchwiebert

"Clear" at Hamler DiamondIn the later days of Grand Trunk's operation, GP38's & GP38-2's were standard power for the former DT&I segment of the railroad. On an August 1996 morning, we see a pair of those units pass the northbound home signal at Hamler.MSchwiebert

Visitor from the EastWith it's home trackage being sold to Railtex (a precursor perhaps to what was forthcoming for the former DT&I) a Central Vermont GP38 leads a southbound into Hamler on the former DT&I on a May 1996 Day.MSchwiebert

Just keep going - the track's in there somewhere! On a typical November 1996 day weather-wise, we see a GT crew negotiating the northwest transfer at Hamler with a pair of EMD's (one in the "traditional" GT scheme, and the other in the short-lived CNNA livery). Between the two transfer tracks in town, the southeast one sees much more grain train interchange than the northwest one - which leads to nature's attempt to reclaim the right of way as is so vividly illustrated here.MSchwiebert

Power balancingOn a crisp spring 2006 afternoon, a brace of 6 I&O units of various lineages leads a northbound freight out of Hamler OH. Normal practice for the I&O finds a unit (or two at the most) powering trains, but today the photographer has hit the jackpot with this lashup.
There's just something ironic about finding six axle tunnel motors in one of the flattest areas of the country!

Lazy morning interruptedBy a southbound I&O freight crossing over the CSX main and passing through Hamler Ohio on an August 2001 morning. The I&O SD40-2 and NYSW SD70M are making easy work of the freight train which included a cut of vehicle frame cars destined for the GM plant in Moraine Ohio.MSchwiebert

Simplicity has it's virturesAmong the last things expected in the 21st century is the installation of a new semaphore signal. Yet that was done in 2006 along the Indiana & Ohio in Leipsic Ohio. Granted it is a "fixed arm" unit, but nonetheless it seems to be an odd choice in this day of "mono hooded" signals. The signal in question is the approach marker for the I&O/NS crossing in Leipsic for northbound moves and replaced a searchlight signal.MSchwiebert

Changing of the guardEarly in the days of I&O operation, four motor power reigned supreme, however the arrival of some former CP Rail SD40-2's signaled the beginning of a trend away from Geep's to SD's. Here we see a pair of the former CP units in the "corporate" scarlet & gray leading a southbound past the township building in Hamler on a sunny December 2003 afternoonMSchwiebert

"Lay of the Land" railroadingUnlike the "new line" portion of the former DT&I (from Malinta northward), which was constructed to "super railroad" standards during the 1920's, the trackage south of there conformed more to the contours and whims of the land on which it was built. Here we see a southbound traversing a rise and a curve between Gallup and Leipsic on a May 1997 afternoon.MSchwiebert

Work in Hamler CompletedAfter completing work in Hamler on a sunny July 1997 morning, I&O GP40 3075 in remnants of the BN "whiteface" scheme and a sister GP40 in I&O paint are seen running 'light' near the north siding switch at Hamler.MSchwiebert

local switchingFaced with a setoff better suited for a southbound train, the crew of a northbound I&O at Ottawa, decide to seperate their power and sandwich the hopper car to make the move. Part way into the procedure, we see GP30 # 86 on the spur, and #87 pulling the car ahead. The crew then used the 86 to back the car onto the spur and reconnected the power, the continued northMSchwiebert
