A time honored waveAs a CSX manifiest negotiates the southeast wye in Deshler, the late Don Rutter gives a wave to the trains engineer. For those of us that frequented Deshler in the 1990's Don was a regular visitor, always taking the time to stop in and say "hello", spin a yarn or tell a joke. He also played a large role in laying the groundwork for the park in the southwest quadrant of the crossing that is a hassle free location for railfans today. The shelter house at the park was donated in honor of Don & his wife.MSchwiebert

Burlington Northern memoriesA 'fallen flag' that seems to have gone under the radar is the Burlington Northern. Myself, I liked the various paint schemes that BN brought to the table prior to the merger with the Santa Fe. On a Sunny may 1992 morning, a pair of BN SD60M's in the 'whiteface' scheme negotiates the southeast wye at Deshler Ohio.MSchwiebert

Pain scheme upgradeDuring early CSX era, the carrier took much criticisim from the railfan community for their seemingly endless variation in paint schemes. After the low point with the 'stealth' scheme, CSX introduced the scheme pictured here. This scheme combined elements with the earlier "civil war scheme and added a yellow nose for visiblity purposes. On a sunny July 1990 afternoon, we see a rebuilt SD40-2 in fresh "YN1" paint leading a "factory built" SD40-2 still in Seaboard system paint.MSchwiebert

WEPX CoalThanks to the need for low sulfur coal at a power plant in Wisconsin, railfans along the CSX east of Chicago in the 1980's & '90's were treated to C&NW power on a regular basis. On a March 1991 morning, a C&NW SD40-2 leads loads westbound through Deshler OHMSchwiebert

Pig BoatsBoth the Chessie and Seaboard components of CSX preferred high horsepower four motor units for their intermodal trains. Chessie of course had a large fleet of GP40/40-2's to use, while the Seaboard side had a fleet of U36B's & B36-7's to choose from. An early operational decision saw (much to the dismay of the crews) the GE's replace the GP40's on the Chessie side for a period of time during the late 1980's and early 1990's. On a a June 1990 morning, a trio of B36-7's power an eastbound through Deshler.MSchwiebert

EMD experimentAfter sampling large orders of C40-8's CSX placed a small order of SD60's to sample EMD's offering. Apparently not impressed, the single order was not repeated - while CSX went on to roster hundreds of C40-8's and C40-8W's. On an overcast 1990 day we see a pair of the SD60's lead an east bound 300 into Deshler.MSchwiebert

136 coming into townDuring the 1980's, CSX ran a pair of intermodal trains in each direction west of Deshler. On a sunny October 1987 morning, a late running 136 breezes past the eastbound home signal. The cut of reefers at the head end was the distinguishing feature for 136 compared to the other east bound pig train (138).MSchwiebert

Deshler LandmarksKnown for trains & corn, here representatives of of both are combined into a single shot on a May 1997 morning. The Deshler elevator does not load via rail at this location instead the Co-op uses the larger facility up the tracks at Custar which is capable of loading 65 car unit trains.MSchwiebert

Turning the cornerRebuilt in the late 1980's to handle the CP/Soo Railrunners after the cabooses were removed, the Northwest transfer at Deshler now serves as the prefered route for freights to/from Chicago to/from Stanley yard in Toledo. On an overcast September 1997 afternoon, a southbound CSX freight crosses Main Street en-route to heading West on the Willard Sub.MSchwiebert

Moving the autopartsOn an overcast September 1988 morning, CSX SD40 8434 - still in Chessie paint and a Chessie painted GP30 lead a southbound manifest through Deshler. While the Main Street buildings and the elevator in the background have changed little in the proceeding 19 years, the railroad 'features' have changed substantially. The siding switch, crossing flashers and signal bridge have all been removed since that time.MSchwiebert

GP30's looking good regardless of paint scheme! On a crisp February 1990 morning, GP30m 4262 in one of the earlier versions of CSX's "Civil War" paint scheme, leads an eastbound grain train past the depot in Deshler. MSchwiebert

Dog's breakfast lashupIn the early days of CSX, it was possible to see an almost endless variety of lashups on their trains, as this train rounding the southeast wye on a July 1988 morning attests.MSchwiebert

Making the meet at S. DeshlerWith the closure of the Ohio division, CSX re-routed a pair of St. Louis bound intermodal trains to operate via Deshler. Here on a July 1988 day, R133 meets R134 at South Deshler. These trains were gone within a few years of this photo, and the Toledo Sub has not seen a regularly scheduled intermodal train since.MSchwiebert

Eastbound 'Jet'In the days before the Conrail acquisition, CSX was frankly a minor player in the Chicago - east coast intermodal lane with 2 trains in each direction. On an overcast October morning in 1991 a SD50 in Chessie paint leads one of the eastbound intermodals through Deshler.MSchwiebert
