Sanitary District of Chicago Railroad Overview
The Sanitary District of Chicago Railroad is owned and operated by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago to take biosolids (cleaned human waste) from its Stickney Water Reclamation Plant to its drying lagoons. It is the only railroad in the United States to haul human waste. Biosolids look and feel like dark, fine-textured topsoil and are useful in restoring damaged land. They are also used on turfgrass at golf courses, athletic fields, and parks.
The railroad operates about 9 miles of track and interchanges, rarely, with CN in Stickney.
