The Port Inland Railroad hauls limestone from the mine to a rail-to-ship transfer location to Port Inland, on Lake Michigan, about 8 miles down the line. The railroad originally sported steam, diesel, and electric power before eventually kicking operating responsibilities over to the Wisconsin Central who operated the line with SDL39s. At some point, G&W took over operations, running former C&IM SD20s as the sole power. Operations were recently passed from G&W to Carmeuse, who decided to use a small fleet of SD20s and GP9s.
