Pioneer Industrial Railway History

  • The Pioneer Industrial Railway, owned since 1994 by Pioneer Railcorp Lines, began operating the city-owned, Peoria, Peoria Heights & Western Railroad (PPHW) on February 20, 1998.
  • The railroad operates roughly 4.5 miles of track.
  • As of 2018, the line has no customers and is only used for car storage. However, as of 2018 there are no cars being stored on the line.
  • PRY interchanges with UP in North Peoria, Illinois.
  • Past customers included Carver Lumber, Gateway Milling, O'Brien Steel, and Peoria Plastics, which all stopped shipping either in the early 2000s or before 2009.
  • The future of the line is uncertain.

PRY was acquired by Patriot Rail after it purchased Pioneer Lines in August 2022.

"20 Years of the Pioneer Industrial Railway"

The line has a very dramatic and complicated history which can best be described in a 3-part YouTube documentary "20 Years of the Pioneer Industrial Railway" by David P. Jordan.
