AAR Reporting Marks - JE.

Joppa and Eastern Railroad Overview

The Joppa and Eastern Railroad is a small shortline railroad operation that used to deliver and switch out Powder River coal trains from BNSF at the EEI Joppa power plant on the Ohio River, just west of Joppa, Illinois. They own numerous hopper cars with JE reporting marks, and used BNSF motive power to move trains in and out of the plant. Trackmobiles were used to switch coal hoppers around the plant.

On August 26th, 2022, BNSF delivered the final coal load to the Joppa plant as train CBTMJOJ0 46A. The plant was officially shuttered a few days later. It will be replaced by a solar farm.

However, the JE is not quite dead yet. Even after the plant's closure, Ozinga Cement has a lease contract with Vistra Energy, the power plant's owner, to process and ship out fly ash from the site. The lease expires at the end of 2023, with a renewable option.

JE uses trackmobiles to switch cars at Ozinga. BNSF's Centralia-Paducah local pulls cars twice a week.

JE interchanges with BNSF at Joppa.
