Ann Arbor Overview

The Ann Arbor Railroad is a Class III Railroad operated by shortline operator Watco. The main route traverses a distance of approximately fifty miles between Toledo, OH and Osmer, MI, with the majority travelling through flat agricultural land. However, the route does encounter a slight grade when travelling north through Ann Arbor. The railroad also has a branch line that runs four miles from Pittsfield Jct. to Saline which is currently only used for railcar storage (Faurecia no longer uses rail service). The railroad also leases and operates an industrial lead in Toledo, Ohio owned by the Norfolk Southern.

The railroad serves as a bridge line, not originating many commodities, but shipping commodities originated by the Great Lakes Central Railroad, Norfolk Southern, and other railroads. Prior to Watco Companies, the railroad was operated by the Ann Arbor Acquisition Corporation from 1988 to 2013, by the Michigan Interstate Railway Company from 1977 to 1988, and as a privately owned enterprise prior to 1977.

Ann Arbor interchanges with:

  • Canadian National at Diann Junction, Michigan and Toledo, Ohio
  • CSX at Toledo, Ohio.
  • Great Lakes Central at Osmer, Michigan.
  • Indiana & Ohio Railway at Diann Junction, Michigan.
  • Norfolk Southern at Milan, Michigan and Toledo, Ohio.
  • Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway at Toledo, Ohio.
