Notes

  • The AA was completely dieselized in 1950 with the arrival of the S3s, RS-1s and FA-2s from Alco.
  • GP35s 385-394 were ordered to DT&I specs (no dynamic brakes) and numbered well above the DT&I's own GP35s (350-357) incase the DT&I acquired more GP35s.
  • There is a common misconception that the AA GP35s ride on the trucks from the AA FA-2s. If one compares the FA retirement dates to the GP35 delivery dates, one will see that many of the FAs were still on the property when the GP35s began arriving. So while the GP35s do ride on Alco trucks, the probability that any are from the actual AA FAs is very low, if not entirely impossible. During this time period, EMD was taking Alco locomotives in trades by the hundreds.
  • During the Wabash era, a few Wabash EMD F7s worked on the AA. 4 of them were sold the AA in 1963 and immediately traded to EMD as credits for the GP35s.
  • During 1964-1965, 3 Leigh Valley Alco C420s ran on the AA for a time. The LV was shopping for new power and had leased 3 DT&I GP35s to evaluate. The trio of C420s was given to DT&I as collateral. The DT&I assigned them to the AA, as the AA employees were more familiar with Alco locomotives. They were returned by the end of 1965.
  • During the DT&I era, AA and DT&I locomotives were freely mixed. Several EMD GP7s, GP9s, GP38s, GP38ACs, GP38-2s, GP40s and GP40-2s worked on the AA during this time. During the early 1970s, the AA was operated almost entirely with DT&I units while the AA GP35s worked on the DT&I. The dynamic brakes on the DT&I's GP38s were reportedly appreciated by AA crews.
  • Ludington & Northern SW8 #16 was leased by AA off and on throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s.
  • The AA was originally to be included into Conrail, but that was later changed. Conrail operated the AA for about a year between 1976 and 1977 until the State of Michigan took over. During this time, the AA GP35s would routinely run-through on sand trains from Yuma all the way to Cleveland, OH on Conrail.
