South Shore is Getting New Cars!!!

Unread post by rsinoms »

I just read in Progressive Railroading that the South Shore has ordered 14 Gallery Style EMU's from Nippon Sharyo which will start being delivered at the end of the year. These are simular to 26 EMU's that metra orderened in 2005!

This purchase has been planned for several years now but was held up looking for where the money would come from.

Sorry to bump an old thread; but I was reading that these cars are supposed to enter service in 2008. as of this summer (July) they were nowhere to be seen @ Millen Station. Does anybody who is in the area have any pics or even know if NICTD has gotten them?

here is the most recent render/drawing of them:

2006? Last I knew they didnt even sign the deal until 2007. I dont believe they are supposed to be here until late mid 2009 at best.

Does the CSS&SB have the clearance for the double decker cars? Granted, most of their trackage is parallel to the NS Chicago Line, on which double stack trains are common, but does anyone know if the CSS&SB would have any low bridges or other things to restrict their clearance?

Metra runs double decks under the CSS cat; so I don't see why CSS couldn't

Metra doesn't run all the way to South Bend though. The CSS line actually separates from the NS and winds its way up to the airport on the west side of town, out beyond the Bendix plant. I guess the wires that cross the line (i.e. that run alongside streets like Lincolnway West) are high enough to not interfere with the line, there probably aren't any overpasses to really worry about along that particular stretch of the line...

The question was more regarding the sections that only CSS&SB uses that don't run directly alongside the NS main.

I don't think it was a wise move to buy these cars from Japan. They never held up well against a giant fire breathing, walking lizard

The first 2 cars, 301 and 302, will be delivered to the Shops on November 19. The new cars are scheduled to enter service in Spring or Summer 2009.

SouthShore could always run the doubledeck cars only from Carroll Ave. in Michigan City to Chicago. That would eliminate some of the older cantenary running east of Michigan City toward South Bend.

Once this project is done, SouthShore can begin restoring the elegant 1927 Insull station at 11th Street in downtown Michigan City! A plexiglass shelter is pathetic!
