Update for August 17, 2019

INSPECTIONS: Several locomotive inspections are being conducted by the KCC&E at both the Atlanta and Chicago shops. This is to ensure that the locomotives are safe and up to code for operation. If any locomotives fail their inspections, they will either have the issues repaired or, if the problems are severe enough, outright retired. These inspections will be conducted over the course of the next six months. The inspections will exclude all locomotives that were built new or rebuilt within the past three years.

STORAGE UPDATE: Around 25 of the previously-stored SD70ACe-T4s are presently at Progress Rail in Muncie, Indiana, getting fixes done. The last of the current 25 at Progress Rail, the KCC&E 5607, 5627, 5666, and 5694, were sent down to Muncie via Norfolk Southern train 19K, and were dropped off at Progress Rail via a local train. There are presently 61 SD70ACe-T4s out of service, including the units at Progress Rail.

MISHAP REPORT: On August 11, KCC&E train Z-CHPI struck a semi-truck in Elkhart, Indiana, severely injuring the driver. The truck driver was airlifted to the hospital, where he is presently recovering. As for the crew, both survived with only minor injuries, while the lead engine, ES44AC 829, suffered from severe damage and will be sent to Chicago for repairs.

I haven't done an update in a long time. It's about time I did.

Update for October 6, 2019

SD50u RETIREMENTS: Many more SD50u units have been retired, but these are going to remain on the property to be used as parts sources to keep the other SD50us running. The 12 SD50us being retired for use as parts sources are 3412, 3419, 3423-3425, 3426, 3437, 3439, 3440, 3444, 3459, 3463, 3466, 3481, 3487, 3491, and 3498. All units were either in Atlanta or Chicago at press time.

LOCOMOTIVE REACTIVATIONS: Several previously-stored locomotives have been reactivated. The units reactivated include 37 SD40-2s and 8 SD60s. A recent surge in general merchandise traffic on the KCC&E has prompted the railway to put these units back in service.

SD70MAC REBUILD PROGRAM: 25 SD70MACs are now billed for Progress Rail for rebuild as SD70MACe type locomotives. These units are KCC&E 1-25. They will be sent to Mayfield, Kentucky, where Progress Rail will rebuild them.

Long time no update.

STORED POWER: Due to continuously declining traffic levels, the KCC&E has stored even more power. These engines include:
- Entire SD60 fleet.
- Entire C40-8 fleet, apart from 58 C40-8us
- Entire SD50d fleet

However, the majority of the SD40 types are in service, with many having previously been in storage. Thus is because these engines are more reliable than the SD50ds, SD60s, and Dash 8s.

TIER 4 ACe STATUS: Over half of the SD70ACe-T4 fleet has been returned to service following tweaks made by Progress Rail. Still, 38 units are stored awaiting their turn to go to Progress Rail in Muncie, Indiana.

SD70MACe PROGRAM: The SD70MACe program is set to begin this January. All of the core units, all SD70MACs, have been sent to Progress Rail in Tacoma, Washington, for conversion to SD70MACe units

Update for January 1, 2020

COMPUTER SYSTEM: The KCC&E's computer system did not suffer from a "Y2.02K" glitch like a group of employees from Detroit thought would happen when the clock struck midnight last night. The clocks made a smooth transition to 2020 with no issues.

STORAGE UPDATE: The KCC&E has put more engines in storage. A group of 20 SD70M-2s in the 5000 series have been put in storage in Atlanta. All are in stored serviceable status, except the 5037, which is in stored unserviceable status. The unit suffered from a broken crankshaft and is expected to be sent to Progress Rail for repairs within the coming months.

ES44AC 926 has been put in storage at Chicago and is apparently stored serviceable. It is unknown why this unit is in storage, considering that the rest of the GEVO fleet is in service at the moment, apart from a couple of ES44ACs at Atlanta for servicing.

Update for January 13, 2020:

STORED POWER: 5 more SD70M-2s have been placed in storage, though all have bad orders and are to get repairs done. 5000, 5003, 5031, 5054, and 5077 are the units that have been stored with a bad order.

CN FRAC SAND TRAINS AND DPUs: CN's run-through frac sand trains from Wisconsin are now running on the KCC&E with a 2×1 power configuration. Before, there were usually 3 units up front providing power. The use of DPUs on heavy unit trains is to become more common in the coming months, as the KCC&E has planned to use DPUs on all trains weighing more than 10,000 tons. DPU-equipped motive power on the KCC&E roster include the AC4400CWs, ES44DCs, ES44ACs, ET44ACs, SD70ACes, and SD70ACe-T4s.

Update for January 20, 2020:

DERAILMENT IN ELYRIA: KCC&E train QCIPH derailed in Elyria, Ohio, on January 17. No locomotives derailed, and, most importantly, nobody was hurt or killed. However, 7 cars derailed, including 3 cars carrying sulfuric acid. Cleanup was completed earlier this morning.

OCEAN NETWORK EXPRESS: The KCC&E has won a contract to haul Ocean Network Express containers out of the Port of Savannah in Georgia. The KCC&E previously had a contract to haul NYK containers out of the same port back in the early-to-mid 2000s, but lost it in 2006 to CSX. NYK has since become a part of ONE.

Update for January 31, 2020:

KCC&E FOURTH QUARTER RESULTS: This will be the first time I share quarterly results on this thread. Operating revenues are down 7% to $2.3 billion due to a decrease in traffic and volume. The trade war against China and tariffs imposed against many countries worldwide have contributed to the decrease in volume. Operating expenses are down just 1% to $1.9 billion. Operating ratio rose to 67.9% from 66.9% last year.

CP REPAYING HORSEPOWER HOURS: The Canadian Pacific will be repaying horsepower hours to the KCC&E. Several engines were already on the property doing so at press time. These are: CP 5037, 6221, 8714, 8748, 8810, 8826, 8837, 8888 (a foamer favorite), 9719, 9804, and 9837.

MINOR DERAILMENT IN OHIO: One articulated car on KCC&E train ZPHCH derailed on January 28, DTTX 767035. Containers involved include UPSU 601048, UPSU 602392, JBHU 257903, JBHU 317893, SNLU 200001, and UPSU 604009. No injuries, but some of the track was damaged. Repairs were done throughout the 48 hours following the derailment.

Update for February 29, 2020

STORAGE UPDATE: The entirety of the SD50d, SD60, and C40-8 (non-rebuilds) fleet remain in storage due to low traffic levels, alongside 30 SD70M-2s and two SD60Is. These will remain in storage until traffic levels rise back up, which, considering the recent events around the world, might be a long while. Marine intermodal container shipments on the KCC&E have decreased sharply.

SD70MACe PROGRAM: Three SD70MACe overhauls have emerged from Progress Rail: KCC&E 3, 7, and 19. These units will be sent to the KCC&E at the beginning of March sometime. At press time, another SD70MACe, 14, was having finishing touches done to it.

CP HPH REPAYMENT: The following Canadian Pacific engines were on the KCC&E repaying horsepower-hours: CP 5037, 6221, 8009, 8143, 8504, 8555, 8705, 8714, 8733, 8748, 8810, 8826, 8837, 8849, 9719, 9804, 9806 and 9837. 8888 was sent back to the CP following an engine failure en route to Philadelphia on the ICHPH-21 on February 21. CP ES44AC 8888 is a railfan favorite, nicknamed the "Crazy 8s" unit. CP's rival CN also has a locomotive numbered 8888 on its roster, classified as an SD70M-2.

KCC&E JOINS EMP PROGRAM: The KCC&E announced on February 20 that they will become part of Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern's EMP intermodal container program, effective March 1, 2020. Other members of this program are the Canadian National, Canadian Pacific, Ferromex, and Kansas City Southern de Mexico.

Update for March 19, 2020:

COVID-19 OPERATING PLAN: The KCC&E has implemented a special pandemic operating plan in order to slow the spread of COVID-19 around the network. The KCC&E is paying very close attention to all of the warnings from local, state, and federal authorities, especially the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The railroad has asked those who are able to do so to work from home and practice "social distancing". All operations buildings, such as dispatcher offices, crew reporting locations, and other facilities, as well as locomotives, are being heavily supplied with cleaning and disinfecting products such as hand soap and disinfecting sprays. As well, to comply with the recent "social distancing" recommendations from the CDC, several of the railroad's facilities are being modified as needed. For those in areas under a lockdown/quarantine, KCC&E employees will be permitted to show law enforcement their employee IDs and will be permitted to go to work from there. There are many other plans going into place as I write this, but these are the main things that are happening now under the KCC&E's pandemic operating plan.

SD70MACe PROGRAM: SD70MACe rebuilds 14 and 17 have been completed and will be put in service at Chicago this weekend. SD70MACes 4 and 6 were also having finishing touches done to them at press time and are expected to be released either this weekend or next week.

STORAGE UPDATE: 3 more SD60Is and 2 C40-8us have been placed in storage, but they are undergoing inspections and will be put back in service when the inspections are completed.

Updates for April 2020:

COVID-19 UPDATE: The KCC&E is continuing to work with its customers and employees during this pandemic to ensure that the workplace environment is clean and that employees have as little contact with the goods shipped and delivered as possible. All employees are washing their hands in warm water for 20 seconds every day at least twice. Employees who do not look or feel well are sent home immediately and are told to stay at home for at least 14 days.

STORAGE UPDATE: More locomotives were put in storage over the past month since I posted. 47 SD60Is and 61 SD70M-2s have been put in long-term storage as rail traffic suffers from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. As well, six of the ten SD9043MACs acquired in 2017 are in storage.

SD70MACe PROGRAM: SD70MACes 4 and 6 have been released from Progress Rail and have been put in service. 1 and 11 are having finishing touches done and the conversion of 8 to an SD70MACe has begun.

Update for April 28, 2020

PAY CUTS AND FURLOUGHS: The KCC&E has announced pay cuts throughout much of the next six months. Executives will get a 50-60% pay cut, with much of the extra money going to essentials needed to keep COVID-19 from spreading across the rail network. Employees will be able to get extra paid leave when sick with COVID-19. Around 200 employees may be earmarked for furlough as the crisis further grips the railroad, with more possible if the "worst-case scenario" were to arise.

STORAGE UPDATE: The following locomotives on the roster are in storage as a result of very low traffic levels related mainly to the COVID-19 pandemic:
  • Entire C40-8 fleet
    12 C40-8us
    27 C40-8Ws
    Entire SD50d fleet
    Entire SD60 fleet
    67 SD60Is
17 SD70ACe-T4s (awaiting fixes from Progress Rail)
    33 SD70Ms
    101 SD70M-2s
The railroad is hoping for a speedy post-pandemic recovery, starting by early-to-mid summer when the virus is expected to be, for the most part, contained in America.

Update for May 21, 2020

STORAGE UPDATE: Adding on to the rest of the stored fleet, 30 more C40-8Ws, 20 more SD70M-2s and 18 more SD60Is have been put into storage. This is due to the severe COVID-19-related traffic slump.

SD70MACe PROGRAM: 1, 8, and 11 have been completed and are in service as of May 21st. The last of the core units for the program are at Progress Rail in Mayfield, Kentucky, for conversion.

MICHIGAN NEWS: The KCC&E has two new trains in the Detroit area profiled: MDESG and MSGDE. These trains will run from Detroit to the KCC&E's new yard in Saginaw. The yard was just completed this month and the first train to Saginaw will run on May 23rd. The KCC&E as a result now has new interchanges with the Huron & Eastern and the Lake State Railway.

Update for June 16, 2020:

DERAILMENT IN DETROIT: KCC&E train QCITO (Chicago-to-Toronto hotshot manifest) derailed on June 5 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The derailment involved eight centerbeam flat cars, all of which were carrying lumber, and three tank cars carrying ethanol. Thankfully, nobody was injured or killed and none of the tank cars were breached. Cleanup took place just a few hours after the derailment. The Detroit Line has since reopened.

NS HERITAGE UNIT ON THE KCC&E AND PTC NEWS: KCC&E train MPACI (Peoria-to-Chicago manifest) had NS 8098, the Conrail heritage unit, in the consist on June 14th. Unfortunately, it was trailing second of four, so it wasn't highly sought after by the local railfans. As a result of PTC implementation on the Peoria Line, foreign power cannot lead on the line anymore until other railroads' motive power achieves interoperability with the KCC&E's PTC system. The interoperability is a work-in-progress, with Union Pacific's locomotives the only foreign locomotives that are able to lead on KCC&E's PTC territory. BNSF locomotives are rumored to be the next foreign locomotives to become interoperable with the KCC&E's PTC system.

Shouldn't take too long to add your system's PTC to foreign locomotives - simple as adding some software and that's that

Update for August 17, 2020

SOME EMPLOYEES COMING BACK/CORONAVIRUS PROTOCOLS: Around 70-80 furloughed KCC&E employees are being called back to work as a partial rebound in traffic takes place. The returning employees, alongside all employees are being required to follow special coronavirus operating guidelines. These include wearing a face covering at all times unless in an area with nobody around, practicing "social distancing" wherever possible, disinfecting workspaces before going off-duty (including locomotives), and, following a positive coronavirus test, quarantining for at least 14 days, though you must get back two consecutive negative coronavirus test results before returning to work.

SD70MACe REBUILD PROGRAM: The program was completed over the time I haven't posted on this thread. All 25 units are in active service.

STORED POWER: As traffic begins to rebound from the low pandemic levels, many locomotives have been reactivated to accomodate for this change. Locomotives include 12 C40-8us, 31 C40-8Ws, 37 SD60Is, 21 SD70Ms, and 46 SD70M-2s. All SD50d and SD60 units remain stored for the forseeable future, however. There is a rumor that the rest of the SD50d fleet is being put up for sale, alongside many other engines, but that has yet to be confirmed.

PTC INTEROPERABILITY: The following foreign railroads' locomotives are now allowed to lead on the KCC&E's PTC territory: BNSF, CN, CP, NS and UP. CSX is expected to join the group later this month as the software gets installed.

The KCC&E uses similar symbols to that of Union Pacific and the Dakota, Minnesota, and Eastern. (Example: Z-CHNY)

The first letter represents the type of train:

A: Transfers
B: Ballast
C: Coal
E: Engine Move
G: Grain
H: Helpers
I: Normal-Priority Intermodal
L: Locals
M: Normal-Priority Manifest
Q: High-Priority Manifest
P: Perishables
R: Rails
S: Special (Excursions, Military, High & Wide, etc.)
T: Ties
U: Other Unit (Ethanol, Limestone, Oil, etc.)
V: Vehicle
Y: Yard Jobs (Special symbols will be used for these, such as Y-AL01 or Y-CA03)
Z: High-Priority Intermodal

The four letters after the dash (between them and the first letter) represent the origin (first two) and destination codes (last two):

AL - Albany, NY
AT - Atlanta, GA
BA - Baltimore, MD
BI - Birmingham, AL
BR - Belt Railway of Chicago Clearing Yard
BS - Bristol, VA
BU - Buffalo, NY
CA - Charlotte, NC
CC - Cincinnati, OH
CI - Chicago, IL (Other Trains)
CH - Chicago, IL (Intermodal Only)
CL - Columbia, SC
CO - Columbus, OH
CS - Charleston, WV
CV - Cleveland, OH
DE - Detroit, MI
DV - Davenport, IA
EI - Erie, PA
ER - East Rutherford, NJ
HA - Hattiesburg, MS
IH - Indiana Harbor Belt
IN - Indianapolis, IN
JA - Jackson, MS
KC - Kansas City, MO
LV - Louisville, KY
ME - Memphis, TN
ML - Mobile, AL (Other Trains)
MO - Mobile, AL (Intermodal Only)
MT - Montgomery, AL
NA - Nashville, TN
NO - New Orleans, LA
NS - Norfolk Southern Interchange
NY - Croxton, NJ (Intermodal Only)
PA - Peoria, IL
PH - Philadelphia, PA
PI - Pittsburgh, PA
RI - Richmond, VA
SB - South Bend, IN
SC - Scranton, PA
SL - St. Louis, MO
SP - Springfield, MO
SR - Springfield, IL
SV - Savannah, GA
SY - Syracuse, NY
TA - Tallahassee, FL
TO - Toronto, ON

And at the end of the symbols, the following suffixes will be used (e.g. Z-CHNYX):

X: Any Extra Unscheduled Run
2, 3, ... : Any Second, Third, and so on Section

For unit trains, the KCC&E will add a letter at the end of the symbol to simplify things:
E- Ethanol
G- Gypsum
I- Iron Ore
L- Limestone
O - Crude Oil
P - Phosphate/Potash or Pipe
S - Steel or Sulfur
W - Windmill

For foreign run-through trains, the KCC&E uses an alphanumeric symbol for their origin/destination codes:
B1 - BNSF Birmingham
B4 - CSX Birmingham
B6 - NS Birmingham
B8 - Shortline/Regional Birmingham
BU2 - CN Buffalo
BU4 - CSX Buffalo
BU6 - NS Buffalo
C1 - BNSF Chicago
C2 - CN Chicago
C3 - CP Chicago
C4 - CSX Chicago
C6 - NS Chicago
C7 - UP Chicago
C8 - Shortline/Regional Chicago
D3 - CP Davenport
K1 - BNSF Kansas City
K3 - CP Kansas City
K5 - KCS Kansas City
K6 - NS Kansas City
K7 - UP Kansas City
K8 - Shortline/Regional Kansas City
N1 - BNSF New Orleans
N2 - CN New Orleans
N4 - CSX New Orleans
N5 - KCS New Orleans
N6 - NS New Orleans
N7 - UP New Orleans
T2 - CN Toronto
T3 - CP Toronto
Love the code system man! This inspired me to do a railroad with similar style of train codes like that! Keep up the awesome work!
