Help with official GLC designations

Unread post by Todd_F »

Hi all!
I’m working on a systemwide GLC video and wondered if anyone could help identify each portion of the line, or branch, as they are referred to today? I use terms like “Middleton Branch”, “Oakley Branch”, “Yuma Line”, etc but I don’t actually know if any of these are official GLC designations.

Thank you for any assistance, insight, or clarity you can offer!!

When finished, I’ll be sure to share the video link.

AA-OWO = AA District
OWO-CAD = Clare District
North of CAD = Northern District (Petoskey and Traverse City respectively)
OAK, MID and YUM are all branches.

I'm guessing at the names to see how close I can get :) .
PatC created a monster, 'cause nobody wants to see Don Simon no more they want AARR I'm chopped liver, well if you want AARR this is what I'll give ya, bad humor mixed with irrelevant info that'll make you roll your eyes quicker than a ~Z~ banhammer...

Thanks for the great info! I didn’t realize the Cadillac District began at Owosso. I always thought Clare separated districts—probably because of how I’ve seen the Caddy/Owosso trains function. It’s good to know why I was wrong.

Does the Grawn Branch have a name or is that part of the TC District?
I’m assuming the TC District starts at Walton Jct.

Based on the mile posts I think the answer to both of your questions is yes (Grawn is part of TC District)

Putting this in order from South to North we have:
Ann Arbor District, MP 47.5 to MP94.1
Trackage Rights over CN / HESR 94.1 to 105.3
Owosso Yard Limits, MP 105.3 to MP 109.5 - => St. Charles District MP 63.5 to MP 85.5
Cadillac District MP 109.5 to MP 225.9 -=> Middleton District MP 20.5 to 32.5
Unknown District 225.9 - 226.3 => Tufford / Northern Yard Limits MP 332 to MP 334.1 => Northern District MP 334.1 to MP 424.8 => Traverse City District MP 0.0 to 35.0 = > Williamsburg District MP 0.0 to 11.5

Unknown District 225.9 - 226.3
Selma Yard Limits, MP 226.3 to MP 229.5
Western District MP MP 229.5 to MP 249.5

AARR, thanks. I never saw mileposts in the grawn line when I was there so I wasn’t sure, but it made sense.

Am I correct to assume the St Charles District is the Oakley Branch?

You are correct, Todd :)

However, I didn't think the tracks were in place past Chesaning anymore :?

Unknown District 225.9 - 226.3

Have heard this called the BELT LINE before. Section between Selma and Tufford yards.

I’ve also heard Cadillac crews refer to that as the Belt Line. It makes sense. :-)

The belt line is the track that rune SW - NE between Selma yard and the PRR enginehouse area

I reviewed a Conrail track chart for the Ann Arbor. The mileposts listed above correlate to where the yard limit sign was located just east of Whaley street to a point that shows a spur (maybe). It does not make sense that there would be a district 4 tenths of a mile long. Where did the list of districts come from?
