NS locomotives on ADBF in Adrian

Unread post by rail_watcher »

A week or so ago I noticed that ADBF moved 1755 back to Blissfield. I was in Adrian today and noticed approximately 8 NS locomotives on ADBF property, just west of their engine house. Anyone know any more information about this?

Occasionally NS units are used on a unit grain train at Blissfield.

JAIL used a NS unit on at least one occasion to fill in while the GP9's were being worked on.

But eight units seems like a lot. Maybe they bought another rail line and will need them.

An NS employee told me 2 weeks ago they were scrapping them at the scrapyard there.

That seems like an awfully big project, for the Adrian Omnisource...

They’re being scrapped by Omnisource.

Well, that stinks. I was wondering, since the delay of painting 1223 & 1759, if maybe ADBF had purchased them to either add to or just replace and update their roster.

SD60's, guess there's no market for them.

Sd60's are not popular models for some reason. NS has dumped a substantial portion of their stock of them. Everything in the 6500 - 6800 series except for 19 units appear to have been dumped. NS did rebuild 135 of the units into SD60E's in the 6900-7035 series but even 17 of those are showed as stored. I suspect NS has pulled the plug on the rebuild project.

Ultimately, SD60s are oddballs caught between the 4400hp bucket and the lauded SD/GP38/40 range.

If you’re gonna downsize to make your fleet more efficient a good bet is to get rid of units which require their own parts stocks, manuals, etc and keep the common stuff.

When i was in Clinton Iowa over Memorial Day weekend. On UP there was a eastbound with 185 cars of mixed frt he stopped to set off and pick up at Clinton. He had three units an SD70ACE leading, Middle unit was a NS SD60E also facing east and a SD70M trailing the SD60E was belching all sorts of smoke i thought not good for a recent rebuild but makes for wonderful pics in witch i got plenty.

Speaking of this, any idea if ADBF is going to paint 1223 and 1759 into the typical ADBF paint scheme? Even their dinner train passenger cars are looking like they could use a coat of paint.

The SD60E and SD70ACU rebuild projects are basically finished. NS is onto the SD70ACC rebuilds now, along with the GE AC44C6Ms.

A group of the SD60E's are being assigned to Pennsylvania coal service to replace the SD60Is. They have assigned power to fit around the dumper on the Strawberry Ridge trains.

It is my understanding that SD60's like the earlier SD50's still had their fair share of electrical issues as well?

I wonder if NS still plans on doing the SD80ACU rebuilds they announced a few years back, which would see the SD80MAC's come out with a new cab, electrical upgrades and a horsepower jump from 5000 to 5500 hp.
