April 2019 obituaries

Unread post by Garry K »

The Ghoul (aka Ron Sweed) has died. Oh, no! Who is going to abuse Froggie? Who will make Cheez Whiz jokes?

https://www.clickondetroit.com/news/det ... -at-age-70

The Ghoul was supposed to make a personal appearance while hosting some horror-type movies at the Redford Theatre in Detroit around last Halloween, but he had to cancel at the last minute. While the Redford Theatre didn't announce to the public that Mr. Sweed was having heart problems, we of the Redford's volunteer staff were informed.

When The Ghoul's show was on Detroit TV in the early 1970s, we would have people over for parties to watch his show. Usually, the movies were so bad we would turn down the sound and play music on the stereo. But then when the Ghoul's segments were on TV, we would turn off the stereo and turn up the sound on the TV.

Fortunately, you can buy Ghoul merchandise at http://www.theghoul.com/merchandise/stuff.html, including videos of him from his TV shows.

Dan Robbins has died. He was the artist who invented the "paint by the numbers" kits in the 1950s.

Is there anyone who was a kid (or maybe an adult?) in the 1950s/1960s who *didn't* paint at least one of those kits? :-)

Speaking of "The Ghoul," the Redford Theatre will have a tribute to The Ghoul on Thursday, April 18, at 8:00 pm.

Come and check it out! I'll be there, for sure.
