Upper Penensula CN Report

Unread post by Doktor No »

Wife and I did a casino run to Escanaba/Harris Sunday to Tuesday. Nothing Sunday, GR&I right of way is still berift of track and trains. Didn't snoop Cadillac. Mack City and Ste. Ignace still trainless. Going across on US2 we stopped in Manistique. Looks like the UP Paper plant hasn't used any rail in some time. Tracks were all rusty and crossings dirt filled. CN depot had a cut of ballast hoppers and that's it. Snagged some artesian well water across the street from the depot though. Good and cold! Gulliver wood yard was full of cars being loaded and two propane tanks at the dealer. Gladstone had a switcher and two GE units at the house and nothing else going on. Escanaba has a new RR bridge over US2 at the river crossing.
Coming home yesterday heard the train go by the casino in Harris but didn't see or get the direction. 10AM ish EDT. Gladstone had the eastbound SOO job built. BNSF GE in the lead and a BNSF cut in behind the ore. Also had the mine loads from the new mine up near Negaunee in the consist. Gee, I wonder where the steel cars for and from the SOO went...8-) Gulliver was still loading a full siding of logs. Storage of log cars with rusty wheels at the sidings along US2 and west of Gulliver.
That's it. Didn't stop much, didn't snoop much...and the wife cleaned up and I got cleaned out at the various gaming tables and one armed bandits. Paid for the trip and more.
Back to your usual deeds. That is all.

Over at Michiganrailroads.com they said the plant is getting regular service. Usually 1-3 box cars several times a week. I think inbounds are set out on the east wye and picked up off the west wye. The plant has something that moves them around inside the plant property.

One of the wye tracks has the main line switch removed, I think it was the west one IIRC. Track pulled for a couple hundred feet from the switch. East wye leg looked rather unused for some time. Shop switcher has a set of trucks out from underneath it unless they are using a track mobile parked somewhere else to move cars. There was a guy mowing the yard in the plant, Should have asked him I guess, eh?
