My first off the cuff guess is somewhere on the BNSF (former BN) high line. in Montanna? maybe Washington state. I won't be able to get more zero-ed in than that with out blowing up the picture and studying the clues.
still waiting for the crossing protection to activate ! :-)

I'm thinking New Orleans?
That was my guess too. We used to drive down US-90 from Biloxi to New Orleans when I was stationed at Keesler AFB, back in the 60s. That "Evacuation Route" sign is also a good hint. I-10 wasn't built yet.

The location of this photo has something to do with Greenfield Village

Yes, Smith Creek, MI on CN Mt. Clemens Sub, looking southwest. The CN bridge over the water of the Smith creek can be seen in the foreground. The final run of the remaining old GTW passenger train between Port Huron and Detroit, was on July 17, 1954. Looking southwest along Main Street, toward Road 704 on the right, in Kimball Township, Saint Clair County.

That would explain why I thought I'd been there when I first saw the photo. There's a new signal (part of the CTC installation) by the grade crossing just beyond the curve in the distance...

Yes, definitely Yale, looking east, along North Street crossing the former C&O, later Chessie, later CSX, now the H&E. That line once ran to Port Huron but have been truncated to the DTE Energy Plant. That crossing is just east of M-19 in Yale, St. Clair County.

And on the other side of the garage in the picture is the church I went to for several years... 8) I've been across that crossing hundreds, if not thousands of times over the years.

That was fast. Thompson Rd. The Air Line yard was located here at the East end of the Michigan Centrals Niles yard.

If your interested in history fall or late winter are goods times to visit. You can locate the old humps when the leaves are off the trees.

Yes, it's Thompson Road, looking west along the old Air Line, later NYC, toward the old Air line Yard and toward the connection with the old Michigan Central RR, north east of Niles in Howard township, Cass County. Passenger train service on that line was discontinued many years ago and the trackage itself was torn up in 1944.
