Plus, I have no time to note if cars are five packs, three packs, or singles. If a five pack equals one car, its easy to see how many containers could be on just ten cars.
For this reason I always count the "platforms" or "wells" on intermodal and other articulated equipment, because it gives the best estimate of train length, without having to be trying to figure out where the couplers are, or count containers.

So in a 5-pack well or spine set, that's 5 cars to my count. Same for a 3-pack, which would be 3 cars.

For the same reasoning articulated autoracks count as two by my convention.

At least, that's how I count for TRRS. I've heard of this method being called the "long" count, with the "short" count being by actual cars, so a five pack, three pack or one pack would all count as one, as the crews referred to it. So the correct railroad count would be based on each car number, but from a railfanning point of view, you count based on what you're trying to measure.

If you're interested in Q384 regularly, you should consider listening to the SuperScanner, links in "Different Take on a Streaming Scanner" in Railfanning Info. There you can listen in from 5pm or so to hear their progress until at least Lake Odessa. That way you can know when they've left GR and then estimate their time from when you lose radio range to you, without relying on somebody to update all the time. :)
It is the only way to go. If nobody reports anything on the train while in GRP, just listen to the scanner feed all the way to Lake Odessa, then switch over to the Grand Ledge feed and you can hear where they are all the way to the time they are in the range of my own scanner at the house. You may not know his entire power consist but you know what his lead unit is and were he is at as he moves easterly.

Have done the very same thing for years on counting cars on anything but intermodal. The long articulated autorack cars have also been counted as two cars on my car counts. Thus the reason I count "well or platforms" on intermodals, not the cars, and list containers and cars separately

Same here. Articulated autoracks = 2 cars, wells counted by how loaded: X doubles, Y singles, Z empties.

My feed will pick up 384 after they get east of Lake O at least as far as Trowbridge. Some days as far as Howell if that may help you.

Last nights Q38425 was by Howell at 04:23, only eight minutes later than yesterday morning. Two BNSF units 7814+6704. 56 intermodal platforms leading ahead of 125 cars behind. 584 axels, 9100 feet long. I see the other two Q384 trains ahead of it aren't doing to well.

Grain load from Webberville sitting in the Fowlerville pass since 08:15, waiting on a road crew to take it east.

Thank you all for the scanner feeds! If maybe I start streaming mine, we could probably almost complete the Plymouth sub coverage. Just let me know if anyone would appreciate something of the sort.
I get coverage from Howell (fuzzy but doable) to a few miles east of the east end of South Lyon.

Guessing you are in the Brighton/South Lyon area. If you can somehow extend it with a larger outdoor antenna and able to reach Plymouth, I can see that as being far more useful. Then you'd be able to hear when Q385 gets their recrew and can start pulling west. Plus get all the traffic that runs north/east/south out of Plymouth as well.
Listening to the GR feed right now, hearing Q32626 at Sawyer and D70026 at St Joseph. Heard Y121 talkin about shoving back to Zeeland around noon as well. 1:10pm.

I'll see if I can do anything, but running on a student budget kills quite a lot of possibilities. If anyone in Plymouth could set one up, it would be perfect.

At 13:17, 75% sure I can hear a horn outside at the east end of SL.

Something just crossed Beck Road (Plymouth). Not sure which direction it was traveling, but...it could have been a westbound.

That was probably V79925, grain load from Webberville. CSX 3122+3037 with 90 cars. They met Q38523 at South Lyon, who just passed Howell at 13:45. CSX 4757+954+350 on that one. Six cars of freight on the head end, followed by 24 container platforms and another 161 cars aster that. In between these two, GLC was over on CSX to pick up 40 cars in the Howell pass left by D708 on Tuesday. Power for the Z62426 GLC train was 397+399

1600 hrs- Q326-26 with the CSXT 3149 leading has 480 axles at CG44.2 and is about to get a shove up Saugatuck hill from D802.

CSXT 6394, a former RF&P GP40-2, is switching the west end of Waverly Yard. Dunno where D700 is.
