The Mechanicsburg elevator was shipping around 1700 car annually at one time.

Website still shows the Mechanicsburg locations still open.

It's possible the frames came from somewhere on CSX. That load wasn't seen coming south.

Mechanicsburg is open and has loaded several trains this year, but the new Marysville location will take at least 25% of the traffic that had loaded their previously. The only kicker is NS has been getting some soybean trains from the I&O. They've loaded 8 or more for Cargill that were routed via Springfield for Georgia and just last week ADM bought a load of soybeans that loaded at Urbana/West Liberty.

They must've come from one of the Metalsa Plant in Kentucky. Shame we won't get to see them come down the I&O from Flat Rock.

Not sure where to post this, but we saw the I&O in Delta around 5:00pm Friday, during a railfan trip. Their train was left on the mainline (looked like mostly steel mill traffic), and the engine was taking the spur back to the yard over a county road. Their yard and office is a long way off the main roads in the cornfields. Surprised we found it.

The yard office and where they park the locomotive is on the east end of Delta yard. The county road used to cross the former DT&I and former Conrail tracks, but it was closed as part of constructing North Star Steel. Most of those yard tracks were cut back/removed during the GTW era after the end of interchanging Ford Auto Parts with the former Wabash line that once passed to the south of the yard (where the bike trail is now). General practice is to leave the cars in the siding up on "the hill" (the whole Ford era "new line" was built to accommodate double track, with sidings like Metamora, Delta and "Maumee" put down on where the second track would have been), and the locomotive down by the yard office when it's not working or taking a train to/from Flat Rock.

I was surprised to see anyone down there when we came down to tie up.

Saw something unique today on Madison Road in Madisonville. That rail bridge that crosses Madison Road is hit at least one time a month by a truck as the height is only like 13 feet. Today I was behind a large semi going along at a good clip and I said to myself I best get in front of him as I know he can't clear that rail road bridge. At the light by the bridge I noticed a flashing list telling the semi driver his truck is too high won't clear the bridge. The truck slammed on the breaks just in time and backed up to turn around. That I&O bridge was hit last year hard by a truck hauling a large steel pipe that it came off the back of the truck and hit a car. That bridge is well made it would take a very hard hit to damage it but the light idea is a great one best they have come up with yet.

Looking at google maps it looks like something was going to be built just north of Leipsic. Anyone know what that was going to be, if anything? Or is it just a connection with CSX and thats it.

Most of the land north of the NS & between the I&O and CSX (north to County Road "D" I believe) is part of what is called the "Iron Highway Industrial Park". The track from the I&O along the NS over to and along the CSX up to Route 65 was put in so that companies that do locate in the industrial park have access to all three railroads (needless to say having access to 3 carriers is something that not many sites can claim). So far there's been a few "near misses" in getting companies to locate there, but my understanding is that there's some things in the works that will change that.

Two new customers are coming to the I&O...one near Delta just north of the steel plant...A steel recycling and processing plant out of Waterloo Indiana is locating across the street from the one of the steel plants...This is MetalX Recycling.

Another near Lima a Belgian plastics company is locating into the former Wright Warehouse on Kibby, located at the sw corner of Kibby on the east side of the I&O.

This is DeSter, a food plastics manufacturer.
