The KCC&E uses similar symbols to that of Union Pacific and the Dakota, Minnesota, and Eastern. (Example: Z-CHNY)
The first letter represents the type of train:
A: Transfers
B: Ballast
C: Coal
E: Engine Move
G: Grain
H: Helpers
I: Normal-Priority Intermodal
L: Locals
M: Normal-Priority Manifest
Q: High-Priority Manifest
P: Perishables
R: Rails
S: Special (Excursions, Military, High & Wide, etc.)
T: Ties
U: Other Unit (Ethanol, Limestone, Oil, etc.)
V: Vehicle
Y: Yard Jobs (Special symbols will be used for these, such as Y-AL01 or Y-CA03)
Z: High-Priority Intermodal
The four letters after the dash (between them and the first letter) represent the origin (first two) and destination codes (last two):
AL - Albany, NY
AT - Atlanta, GA
BA - Baltimore, MD
BI - Birmingham, AL
BR - Belt Railway of Chicago Clearing Yard
BS - Bristol, VA
BU - Buffalo, NY
CA - Charlotte, NC
CC - Cincinnati, OH
CI - Chicago, IL (Other Trains)
CH - Chicago, IL (Intermodal Only)
CL - Columbia, SC
CO - Columbus, OH
CS - Charleston, WV

And at the end of the symbols, the following suffixes will be used (e.g. Z-CHNYX):
X: Any Extra Unscheduled Run
2, 3, ... : Any Second, Third, and so on Section
For unit trains, the KCC&E will add a letter at the end of the symbol to simplify things:
E- Ethanol
G- Gypsum
I- Iron Ore
L- Limestone
O - Crude Oil
P - Phosphate/Potash or Pipe
S - Steel or Sulfur
W - Windmill
For foreign run-through trains, the KCC&E uses an alphanumeric symbol for their origin/destination codes:
B1 - BNSF Birmingham
B4 - CSX Birmingham
B6 - NS Birmingham
B8 - Shortline/Regional Birmingham
BU2 - CN Buffalo
BU4 - CSX Buffalo
BU6 - NS Buffalo
C1 - BNSF Chicago
