Kansas City, Chicago, and Eastern Railway

Unread post by ThomasACu »

This is a locomotive roster for a fictional railroad I created, known as the Kansas City, Chicago, and Eastern Railway. The railroad began operations in 1989, after the merger of the Kansas City and Chicago Railroad and the Seaboard Eastern Railway. Now, they own 30,000 miles of trackage (including the Canadian Line from Detroit to Toronto), and directly compete with the likes of CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern.

Main yards are located in Albany, Atlanta, Baltimore, Birmingham, Buffalo, Charlotte, Chicago, Columbus, Detroit, East Rutherford (NJ), Indianapolis, Kansas City, Louisville, Memphis, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Tallahassee, and Toronto. The KCC&E interchanges with all class one railroads except Ferromex (for obvious reasons), as well as many regional and short line carriers.

This post will be updated monthly.

The KCC&E uses similar symbols to that of Union Pacific and the Dakota, Minnesota, and Eastern. (Example: Z-CHNY)

The first letter represents the type of train:

A: Transfers
B: Ballast
C: Coal
E: Engine Move
G: Grain
H: Helpers
I: Normal-Priority Intermodal
L: Locals
M: Normal-Priority Manifest
Q: High-Priority Manifest
P: Perishables
R: Rails
S: Special (Excursions, Military, High & Wide, etc.)
T: Ties
U: Other Unit (Ethanol, Limestone, Oil, etc.)
V: Vehicle
Y: Yard Jobs (Special symbols will be used for these, such as Y-AL01 or Y-CA03)
Z: High-Priority Intermodal

The four letters after the dash (between them and the first letter) represent the origin (first two) and destination codes (last two):

AL - Albany, NY
AT - Atlanta, GA
BA - Baltimore, MD
BI - Birmingham, AL
BR - Belt Railway of Chicago Clearing Yard

TO - Toronto, ON

And at the end of the symbols, the following suffixes will be used (e.g. Z-CHNYX):

X: Any Extra Unscheduled Run
2, 3, ... : Any Second, Third, and so on Section

For unit trains, the KCC&E will add a letter at the end of the symbol to simplify things:
E- Ethanol
G- Gypsum
I- Iron Ore
L- Limestone
O - Crude Oil
P - Phosphate/Potash or Pipe
S - Steel or Sulfur
W - Windmill

For foreign run-through trains, the KCC&E uses an alphanumeric symbol for their origin/destination codes:

Kansas City, Chicago, and Eastern Updates - Monday, July 3, 2017

FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY

SD90MAC STATUS: The first SD90MAC has been released from the Chicago Shops and put into service: KCC&E #5700. It is still in Canadian Pacific’s “Golden Beaver” paint scheme, but with a green and yellow number patch cabside. It left Sunday afternoon as the lead unit of M-CIIN (Chicago to Indianapolis). KCC&E #5703 is in the process of completion, along with #5708.

KCC&E TO HANDLE FORMER CSX TRAFFIC: After CSX abolished several UPS trains, the KCC&E has announced that they will be handling these trains.

Kansas City, Chicago, and Eastern Updates - Wednesday, July 5, 2017

FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY

INDIANA COLLISION: Train M-CISB collided with a semi-truck Tuesday afternoon in the town of New Carlisle. The lone driver was killed on impact, and the lead engine, KCC&E ES44AC #903, suffered substantial damage. Chicago Subdivision trains would detour on the CSX Garrett Subdivision until 7:30 PM, when the wreck was cleaned up. A 20-mph restriction was put in place as soon as the line re-opened.

MORE LEASERS: Rumor has it that, in addition to the former Norfolk Southern C40-8’s on long-term lease from Larry’s Truck & Electric (LTEX), a trio of CIT (CEFX) SD60s will be coming. These are former Soo Line units that were last on lease to Norfolk Southern in 2015-16.

The LTEX C40-8 leasers include: 8734-35, 8738, 8740, 8742-44, 8747-51, 8753, 8755-57, 8759-60, and 8762.

It is unknown which CIT SD60s are being leased, as this is just a rumor.

FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY

TWO MORE SD90MACs RELEASED: KCCE 5703 and 5708 have been released for service, still in CP Beaver paint with a KCC&E Green/Yellow number patch. KCCE 5700 returned to Chicago Thursday afternoon as the leader of M-INCI.

NS SD60E INVASION: Thursday’s Locomotive Trace shows us that four of Norfolk Southern’s SD60E rebuilds have been roaming the KCC&E system (one of which just interchanged with the KCC&E).

NS 6901 DEPART LOAD KANSASC MO 13:59
NS 6947 ARRIVE LOAD MEMPHIS TN 10:36
NS 6961 INTERC KCCE CHICAGO IL 18:01
NS 7030 DEPART EMPTY TALLAHA FL 09:40

INTERC = Interchange
KANSASC = Kansas City
TALLAHA = Tallahassee

PTC: A PTC Test Train, S-TADT (Tallahassee, FL - Dothan, AL) was running on the Tallahassee Subdivision on Thursday, with ES44DC #4503 leading SD40M-2 #2319. As well, PTC installation has been completed on the Georgia Subdivision (Atlanta to Savannah) and the New Orleans Subdivision (Jackson, MS, to New Orleans, LA). This signifies that much of the KCC&E system is now beginning to move quickly to Positive Train Control technology.

Kansas City, Chicago, and Eastern Updates - Monday, July 10, 2017

FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY

ENGINE FIRE: Sunday’s M-EVIN (Evansville to Indianapolis) had a big issue. The lead unit, KCC&E AC4400CW #148, had a severe engine fire while trying to depart with the 200-car load. The trailing units were SD70ACe #5592 and SD70ACe-T4 #5600. Much of the locomotive is now fried, and the unit will eventually be sent to the Chicago Shops for repair. For now, it is in storage at Indianapolis Yard.

KCC&E #7049 RETURNS TO AMERICA: The KCC&E Dash 9 that has been in Mexico for the past week has finally made its way back into the U.S. on a KCS train. Here is the latest trace of KCC&E #7049:

Kansas City, Chicago, and Eastern Updates - Tuesday, July 11, 2017

FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY

SEVERE WEATHER: Severe thunderstorms have been threatening the states of Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio on Monday. These storms have affected service in the region. There are precautions train crews are required to take during certain severe weather events. For instance, when a tornado warning is issued, trains in the warning area, or within a 5 mile radius of the warning area, are required to stop, and the crew is required to seek refuge in the nearest substantial shelter available. However, when a severe thunderstorm warning is issued, trains will still be moving, but restricted to a much lower speed than the track limit.

SD90MAC UPDATE: Patch renumbering of KCC&E #5705 has been completed at the Chicago Shops. It retains its original Canadian Pacific scheme, but with a green and yellow number patch. It has been placed into service on Train Q-CIKC on Monday.

Union Pacific C40-8 #9101 was caught leading the Z-CHNY today out of Chicago. Three other engines were trailing: KCC&E ES44DCs #4582 and #4677, and SD70M #4410.

UP 9101 is one of the many 1990's-built Union Pacific engines repaying horsepower-hours to the KCC&E. They need to repay a bunch of them to the railway, so they will be running around the system for a while.

As a result, occasional 4-5 unit consists will show up on the system's trains, with 2-3 on line. The other units in the consist are used for backup purposes. Sometimes, all units will be on line.

Only one thing to note for today:

FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY

MORE CSX TRAFFIC: CSX has abolished more trains and ridded themselves of much of their traffic. The KCC&E has picked this traffic up, and will likely require more power for these trains.

STORMS: More storms in the Northeast have washed out tracks. As a result, many trains were rerouted on the NS and CSX. Intermodal and mail traffic has slowed down a little because of this, and it is likely that this may happen again at the start of the work week Monday.

LOCOMOTIVE RETIREMENTS: ET44AC #1018 has been retired following a large fire. It was reportedly caused by an employee who was smoking on the job. A cigarette was likely the cause of the fire.

FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY

MORE LEASERS: Three CIT SD60’s will be joining the lease fleet soon. The KCC&E has decided to lease them for the fall traffic surge. These units are CEFX 6003, 6004, and 6010. All units were previously stored at Norfolk Southern’s DeButts Yard in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and are in CIT Blue paint. Norfolk Southern will be running a transfer train to the KCC&E today with the CIT trio in-transit.

ODDBALL CONSISTS FROM SATURDAY: M-TOBU-15 (Toronto to Buffalo) had a BC Rail cowl unit leading the way, C40-8M #4615. However, the unit was in CN paint, with “BCOL” sublettering. Z-CH1NY-16 (BNSF Chicago to New York) had a Santa Fe Warbonnet trailing, BNSF #660.

TRAIN ENCOUNTERS COYOTES: A local transfer train coming out of Indianapolis had to stop on Saturday night for a band of coyotes sitting on the Lafayette Main near Lebanon, Indiana. However, the coyotes ran off as soon as the engineer blew his horn a couple of times. They were on their way soon thereafter.

SD90MAC UPDATE: KCC&E SD90MAC #5709 just had its patch renumbering completed at Chicago, and has been released into service. As well, the Chicago Shops is almost done with patch renumbering for KCC&E #5707. It will likely be released later today.

UP SD60M LEADS THE Z-CHNY: Union Pacific SD60M #2250, currently repaying horsepower-hours for the KCC&E, was caught leading the hottest train on the system. UP #2250 is a rare “Triclops” SD60M built in 1989 by EMD. It gets its nickname from the distinctive three-piece windshield it has.

FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY

DERAILMENT: Train Q-CIDE (Chicago to Detroit) derailed on the Chicago Subdivision Friday afternoon. Only three cars were involved and the cleanup did not last long at all.

TEENAGERS VS. THE CREW OF Z-NYLA: The crew on the daily Croxton-to-Los Angeles intermodal to Union Pacific had to deal with some defiant teenagers Friday morning getting out of the terminal. The two teenagers were reported sitting on the main out of the Croxton terminal chatting. As soon as the train came out, and as soon as the crew first laid eyes on the teenagers, it stopped. The engineer came out and told them to get off property, as they were trespassing. One of the teenagers yelled and swore at the engineer, telling them that they were “invading their privacy”. As well, they threatened to use violence against the engineer. The engineer called police, but until they came, the teenagers fought with the crew. Police eventually came and removed the teenagers off of property, and Z-NYLA began their journey to Chicago, where they would interchange their load with Union Pacific. Just another day in the life of a train crew.

Kansas City, Chicago, and Eastern Updates - Monday, July 24, 2017

FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY

SD90MAC UPDATE: KCC&E SD90MAC #5706 is the last unit to get its new KCC&E number patch. It was released into service Sunday. The only SD90MAC left is #5701, which is getting repainted into full KCC&E paint right now at the Chicago Shops.

GTW SD40-3 ON THE KCC&E: GTW SD40-3 #5944 was seen leading KCC&E Train Q-TOCI today. It was in Canadian National Red, White, and Black paint with “GTW” sublettering. GTW #5944 has been in helper service on the CN’s Byron Hill Route in Wisconsin for a while.

STRUGGLING UP THE HILL: On a steep grade in West Virginia, a KCC&E coal train coming from the McElroy Mine had three AC4400CW’s leading the way, #194, #392, and #237, with SD70ACe #5472 and ES44AC #901 pushing on the back. Apparently, the load was heavier than the crew thought, so the train stalled on a steep grade along its route. A nearby yard sent two more locomotives, ET44AC #1092 and SD70ACe #5310, to be put on the back of the train. The train successfully made it up the grade and continued with no issues.

AMTRAK AGREEMENT: Recently, the KCC&E agreed to allow Amtrak to run some trains on their trackage, including the “Capitol Limited” and “Lake Shore Limited”.

LTEX LEASER DUO ON M-EIBU: The Erie-to-Buffalo manifest train had a set of LTEX C40-8 units for power Tuesday, #8762 and #8738. As well, trailing the two leasers was CSX SD70MAC #4776 and KCC&E SD50d 3459. The SD70MAC has been on the KCC&E for about two weeks now.

MORE LEASE ENGINES ON THE WAY: The KCC&E just contracted with National Railway Equipment to lease several SD60 locomotives. These locomotives will be:

SD60: 5951-52, 5959, 5962, 5974, 5980, 5988

NEW ORDER FOR TIER 4 GEVOs: A brand new order for General Electric’s ET44AC locomotive has been placed by the KCC&E. These units will be numbered 1120-1199. The first batch of these units will be delivered starting in late August or early September at the latest. However, the C36-7u's that many thought would leave because of these new Tier 4 units will stay with the KCC&E. More trackage in the western part of the system has been added on and more trains have begun to show up around the system in general due to CSX cutting more trains. So, the KCC&E needs all the power they can get their hands on at this point.
