EJ&S Freight Info Wanted

Unread post by MQT1223 »

Anybody got any personal or historical records regarding what types of freight and car counts the PM and later C&O handled to interchange for the East Jordan and Southern before its closure in 1962?

Was up in East Jordan last weekend and managed to run into a former Conductor who was on the last run of the EJ&S. Amazing stories to tell about traversing the 20 mile line to Bellaire and what kinds of freight that was hauled but not much in regards to numbers.

Besides the Iron Works, I noticed there is a Co-op in East Jordan next door to the depot that apparently received coal and other raw materials for sale to the residents of East Jordan. A couple of concrete ramps, reminiscent of a transload, are still in place near the Co-op.

Any info is appreciated.

Jerry Pinkepank had a three page article in the January 1962 Trains entitled "Crossing over Jorden". He also furnished some photos for an exhibit in East Jordan although he doesn’t know where they are displayed, He remembers the depot being adjacent to the enginehouse and the iron works although that was five decades ago.

Originally Jordon Works included a saw mill, which sold lumber and supplied waste wood to make charcoal, a chemical works extracted products from the charcoal process, then the charcoal was used for the foundry works, as the supply of usable trees ran out so did the first works. Same board of directors but three separate companies.

Interesting paperwork from East Jordan Auto Parts.
Go to their Facebook page, East Jordan Auto Parts also had a small yard with a siding in East Jordan.
