A shorty that isn't a dwarf...
Amazingly enough, I have never stopped by Winters Road on the New Castle District before.
ROFL. What a weird setup. (it's because of the extreme proximity of an Airport runway.)

Red at the top of the upper head?
It is an interesting and unique signal.

When the signal system was installed on the New Castle District, the absolute signal was erected at Pleasant Center Road, the next road to the south. It was destroyed in a truck/train collision sometime in the late 80's, as best as I recall. When a new absolute signal was put up, the signal at Winters Road was put up with a traditional signal mast but taken down and reconfigured to the signal you see in the pictures within one or two days, because of the airport.

Im wondering how well a tower for ptc will work next to warsaw airport at the 23 signal on marion branch

It is not directly in the flight path. There should not be a problem. At worst they would need to erect the antenna south of 250N if they could not get approval for the height they want next to the signal. There is an electrical line along the north side of 250N that doesn't seem to be a problem at the railroad crossing.rob46580 wrote:Im wondering how well a tower for ptc will work next to warsaw airport at the 23 signal on marion branch
BTW: Last year the tower was on the ground between the signal and the airport fence.
Re: A shorty that isn't a dwarf...
They put up antenna at 23 9n marion branch, shorter version at signal, so not too restricted there.
Re: A shorty that isn't a dwarf...
I was thinking perhaps this had something related to the ILS approach to RWY 32. Glide slope and localizer waves can be interfered with by metal. OTOH, checking the approach plates ans notices to airmen there does not appear to be any relation. Bottom line: I dunno.

Re: A shorty that isn't a dwarf...
Is it shorter than the nearby power lines? Shorter than the tree line?
Re: A shorty that isn't a dwarf...
About same as powerlines
Re: A shorty that isn't a dwarf...
40°58'27.15"N 85°10'43.06"W if you want to investigate yourself
The darn signal is 142 feet off the center-line that extends from the 14/32 runway at Baer Field. It's about 2000 foot actual off the runway.
The ILS and runway guide lights run right past it.
All power lines in the immediate area are buried or run around the next grid-line away.
NS really screwed the pooch when they put that signal there. Now there is NO way to get enough elevation there to get 220mhz coverage for PTC.
Rumor has it they are installing the replacement at the next crossing to the south.

The ptc antenna, and maybe the signals by Waterloo airport are shorter too,lol

The new signals at 3641/3642 are the normal height. 3641 signals are mounted on a small cabinet, 3642 signals are mounted on a mast. The current 3641/3642 signals are not far away if one wants to compare heights. I do not have a picture of 3641/3642 replacements with the PTC antenna.rob46580 wrote:The ptc antenna, and maybe the signals by Waterloo airport are shorter too,lol
The PTC antenna at 3641/3642 is registered with the FCC and is 12.1 meters tall.
Registration Number: 1296898
Status: Constructed
Owner Name: Norfolk Southern Railway Company
Latitude/Longitude: 41-25-48.9 N 084-59-08.8 W
Structure City/State: Waterloo, IN
Overall Height Above Ground (AGL): 12.1

(The PTC antenna at 23N/23S in Warsaw is registered as 10.1 meters tall and stands next to normal height signals.)
