Best looking locomotive of all time (opinion/ discussion)
Best looking locomotive of all time (opinion/ discussion)
We have discussed paint schemes and such of the likes before, but I do not believe specifically we have discussed what people consider the best looking locomotive of all time personally. There are no right or wring answers here, from big boys to GP30s to P42s everyone has a favorite and I am interested in what you guys think and why.
My favorite locomotive of all time is the streamlined 4-6-4 Dryfuss Hudsons run by the NYC. To me these units look like they are moving even when they are standing still. Simply a classy locomotive with great lines, put a matching set of coaches behind one and you are sitting pretty. It is also neat to me that they once roared up and down the old MC with passenger trains between Chicago, Detroit, and New York.

My favorite model that we have is our streamlined Hudson (sitting next to our J-class #611)

Steam: can't beat a Dreyfuss Hudson. Nothing ever made steam look so good.
Diesel: Covered Wagons...I'll take E and F unit Warbonnets, please!
Electric: Japanese Skinkansen bullet trains
Yeah, I like streamlined for looks. I gotta say though, the ruggedness, military-styling on the earlier EMDs and then the SD70ACe are good, too.
GE looks like something in the middle. It has no style.

I,ve always been partial to E units. But the PAs are cool too.

Re: Best looking locomotive of all time (opinion/ discussion
I love E units as well. PAs look goofy to me, like a distorted version of an E unit that Lionel would have made, or something you'd see on a Bugs Bunny cartoon. Just an aesthetically bad design to my eyes.hoborich wrote:I,ve always been partial to E units. But the PAs are cool too.

Re: Best looking locomotive of all time (opinion/ discussion
My locomotives, paint schemes + roadnames included. Paint schemes alone would be another different story as certain paint schemes fit some locomotives better then others.
Here's my top three steamers, a very hard choice for me.
1. Lima Pere Marquette N class 2-8-4 Berkshire
2. Baldwin Baltimore and Ohio EM-1 class 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone
3. ALCO Milwaukee Road A class 4-4-2 "Hiawatha" Atlantics
And for my diesels, again tough choices.
1. Seaboard Air Line E6
2. Interstate ALCO RS3
3. Virginian Fairbanks-Morse H24-66 "Trainmaster"
