There are some very well informed people that will tell you PR trumps marketing. There are also others who will tell you the opposite. It seems CSX has gone more to the airwaves to get noticed, and NS has decided to get more notability by doing special locomotives and running a steam fleet. Lots of people forget about rail transportation, so just having everyone know about you is BIG.

We see two rather different strategies by the two very competitive eastern giants. Grab some popcorn, the battle is far from over.

Wonder what the 'average' settlement awarded by a jury to a plaintiff that gets hit by a train is? Probably a couple million? Get the message out, prevent a couple of 'trespasser deaths' and that message has paid for itself. Tax liability notwithstanding.

Or...run steam trains...paint special locomotives that encourage people to come trackside, act stupid, and raise the risk of such a 'collision'.

Guess its all in what you value...

From Jayski.com:
CSX Returns to Ragan's #34 for four races: After a successful season promoting rail safety with David Ragan in 2013, CSX will again partner with the race-winning driver and Front Row Motorsports' #34 team for the 2014 Sprint Cup Series season. The partnership will include primary sponsorship of Ragan's Ford Fusion for four races -- at Daytona International Speedway in February, Darlington Raceway in April, Michigan International Speedway in August and Richmond International Raceway in September. CSX will also be a major associate on the #34 at Pocono Raceway in August and at Charlotte Motor Speedway in October. The familiar "I Brake for Trains" bumper sticker will once again be on the back of Ragan's car for all 36 races of the Sprint Cup schedule. The transportation company utilized its sponsorship of Front Row last year to successfully communicate the dangers of trespassing on railroad tracks to its target demographic of males age 18 to 34.(Front Row Motorsports)(1-24-2014)

#34 CSX sponsored race car won the NASCAR race at Pocono today. Unfortunately they were not the primary sponsor for this week's so the car was not in CSX colors.
You can see the various 2016 paint schemes for the #34 car, including CSX here: http://www.jayski.com/news/schemes/2016 ... am-Schemes
Multiple listings on eBay and other sites for 1/24th and 1/64 scale diecast model versions of the car.
