Cargill is closing its wet corn mill at Memphis. This is more than just the grain elevator, as it produces High Fructose Corn Syrup, starch and gluten feed, and employs 440 workers.

This is a strange development given that Cargill announced an eight-year, $72 million expansion project for this plant only two years ago. But I guess the decline in HFCS markets must have been sudden since that time. It wouldn't surprise me if the plant was sold to another processor shortly. The EPA may soon raise the ethanal production quota because of E85 demand, so conversion to ethanol production is a possibility.

The refinery that will remain in operation is a corn oil refinery. Corn germ is the raw material for corn oil, most of which likely comes from the adjacent wet corn mill. But Aventine Renewable Energy in Pekin, Illinois has been sending corn germ to Memphis via CN for many years. When the wet mill closes, another Cargill plant (Cedar Rapids, Iowa most likely) will probably make up the difference.

Corn Syrup is on the hit-list for bad foods. I suspected as more people stopped buying products with corn syrup production would have to drop and plants cut back or close.
PatC created a monster, 'cause nobody wants to see Don Simon no more they want AARR I'm chopped liver, well if you want AARR this is what I'll give ya, bad humor mixed with irrelevant info that'll make you roll your eyes quicker than a ~Z~ banhammer...

My girlfriend just developed an allergy to corn, It's amazing how much stuff has corn in it. The amount of products you can buy without it is also way higher than I thought. I'd prefer sugar to corn syrup when I can anyways but the decline is definitely due to a move away from corn syrup particularly HFCS.
