Mt. Clare Diesel shops.

Unread post by ES44AH »

This the M&N's diesel repair shops. Mt, Clare is located in the city of Baltimore and served as the starting point of the B&O in the 1830's. The very first mile of US railroad was in what is now the Mt.Clare yard. The shops are primarily used for locomotive repair and maintainence, but has done complete overhauls and rebuilds. The complex has storage tracks holding diesels from the late 1940's all the way up to the mid 1990's, and has parts for almost any locomotive. With the recent purchase of Evolution-series and AC4400CWs, the shops now carry parts for those engines. The M&N's roster of Electric locomotives are serviced here too. Diesels maybe serviced at the Cumberland shops, but that is primarily steam. Anything having to do with the M&N diesels will be posted here.

We will produce the CE-8 rebuild locomotive for any road who wants them. We currently have 22 E-8A and E-8B in our backlot that will be rebuilt into CE-8 roadunits. If anyone is interested, the basic CE-8A will be sold for $500,000 and the CE-8B will go for $450,000. The CE-9 (not a rebuilt E-9) is a turbocharged version of the CE-8. The CE-9 goes for $700,000.

Currently, the M&N has a bunch of historical and iconic locomotives, locomotives like GM50, PRR S-2 steam turbine, N&W A,Y, and J-classes, and a few others. Well, our "scouts" have found another, lying underneath a heap of scrap in Upstate New York. It the sole survivor and unfortunately, the other unit was scrapped years ago. Under the mount of scrap was a Baldwin DR-12-8-1500/2, better known as the Centipede. The Centipede was a twin unit heavy locomotive and rarely was seperated, but this one was. This is a former PRR unit and from what the scouts said, it has no internals at all and no trucks. It is an empty shell. We are thinking of purchasing this unit due to its rarity, but since it is such a terrible state it may not fall thru. If we do, this unit will not ride the rails again for atleast 2-3 years because we would have to track down, or machine new parts. If we cant aquire this unit, the same scrapyard has a RF-16 Sharknose from the NYC. More details will be posted here or the M&N thread.

After further inspection of the Centipede, it has been decided that it is in too bad of shape to be rebuilt. However, in its place, we are purchasing 2 RF-16s. The RF-16s are both former B&O units and are in a fairly good shape. The Sharks will be rebuilt to running condition, but wont have its original Baldwin 608a. It will instead be replaced with a inline GE 8-GEVo primemover, specially designed for the sharks. They will produce 3200hp and will have AC traction motors. The A-B set will have semi-permanent couplers and they will primarily be used as helpers on Sand Patch.

Since the MNTC didn't buy the centipede, the RR museum of PA has anounced that with the help of a $300,000 donation from PC that they are going to buy it and give it a cosmetic(i.e. non operating) restoration. PC will assist with helping the museum find a builder to build a set of the unique Baldwin trucks for it. The museum hopes to complete this project by the end of the year so that they can add it to their displays in spring 2014.

CE-9 #20 is on the Northwestern for testing and evaluation. The superintendent of locomotive operations has gone down on car #1. The Chessie System has taken the CE-9 and car 1 to the Carolina Southern who is taking the unit to the Northwestern Railroad.

The A-B set of RF-16s have been purchased and are making their way to the shops. General Electric is building a special 8-cylinder GEVo primemover for the Sharks. These are inline engines and put out 2200hp. The Sharks will have AC traction motors and added ballast for extra weight. These will be used as MoW, extra, and reserve helper service. The new designation for these units will be RF-22a and RF-22b.

The AC6000CW that will be built by Lima Locomotive Works will recieve a special paint scheme for the Maryland Department of Tourism. The Unit will be used on special occasions along with the diesel heritage units. The locomotive will run with a train of 6 passenger cars for state sponsored events.

The B&O diesel heritage unit will see service tomorrow. The WM heritage unit is in the paint shops. 2 heritage units are being paint by our shops for the ChessieSystem. A SD70ACe in B&O "Sunburst" and a ES44AC in C&O "Bow wave."
Chessie will run those in everyday service, but not on CSX trains.

DO YOU HAVE MORE SPECS ON THE CE-8 AND CE-9
THE SAMM RR HAS A WEIGHT LIMIT ON ITS TRACK OF 500,000 LBS SD45 OR SMALLER
DO THE STILL USE THE E UNIT NOSES OR DO YOU SWITCH TO GEEP NOSES
SAMM RR MIGHT WANT TO DO A TRAIL PERIOD

CE-9 #20 has arrived and repair work has begun. The unit will recieve new handrails and an "armored" nose. The nose "armor" is refering a steel framework that will go in the nose for crash protection. #20 will be back on the road in 2 weeks.
