Hagerstown & Frederick Railway

Unread post by ES44AH »

This is the fictional operation of the real H&F, which discontinued operations in the 1950's.

The H&F railway was a small 83 mile long traction railroad located in central Maryland. It was created from smaller traction companies. The H&F interchanged with the Western Maryland railroad at Thurmont, MD and with the B&O in Frederick. The H&F was the last trolley line in the state of Maryland and the last train made its run in 1954. In this fictional take of the H&F, the line in busier than ever, but still retains its small fleet of wood and steel body trolleys, and second-hand bought/home-built freight motors. Some modern traction equipment are on the roster including LRVs and 2 Gensets. Today, the H&F has extensions to Gettysburg, Brunswick, Martinsburg, Gaithersburg, and possible extension to Baltimore. In Brunswick, Martinsburg, Gaithersburg, and Frederick the H&F interchanges with the Maryland & Northern.

I know i already have been, but Im only posting thge freight, special runs, and MoW operations. If i did all of the interurban runs, i would need to post every 5 minutes :) So, all interurban and suburban trolley runs are more or less implied. The interurban/suburban trolleys run from 9:00am to 9:00pm on weekdays and 9:00am to 10:30pm on weekends. For those who want a schedule, please send me a PM.

LRV #200 has struck an 18-wheeler in Frederick earlier this afternoon. The driver was not injured, but the LRV's motorman has some minor injuries. The trailer was empty, but still caused a fair amount of damage to the LRV's frontend. The truck driver said he thought he cleared the crossover, but but couldn't see past his trailer that blocked his view from the LRV. Luckily, the collision happened at a slow speed, as the LRV was just departing from the station. #200 has a broken windshield and a broken coupler. The 18-wheelers trailer was minorly damaged. The accident has caused a major backup in town for motorists trying to get through the city. #200 will be pulled from service for repairs.

In a time where a lot of RRs are starting heritages, the H&F will join too. The H&F is sideling 4 Interurbans to make up a heritage. The trolleys wont be wearing a special paint job though, so it may be kind of hard to distinguish them. The 4 cars are representing 4 of the many trolley lines that eventually became the H&F. The selected roads are: Frederick & Middletown, Hagerstown Rwy, Frederick Rwy, and Washington, Frederick,& Gettysburg. Each car will be hand painted, with paint rollers, in the same fashion the original cars would have been painted, before spray guns. The first car will be # 1895, the F&M car. Followed by #1908 and #1909 (HgRY and FdRY). The H&F 1913, will be last. All cars are numbered for the years of chartering or merger. The H&F car is numbered for the date it was created, March 22, 1913. This will celebrate the H&F's 100th anniversary.

The Car Barn in Frederick has completed the 4 heritage cars that were supposed to be unveiled on March 22. The reason for the delay was actually due to a paint shortage. The painters had no gold leaf paint for the H&F Centennial car. Now that they are finished, they will be unveiled this Saturday and will enter interurban service next Monday. The cars will be assigned to their namesake lines, the F&M car (H&F 1895) will serve the towns of Myersville, Middletown, Boonsboro, and Braddock Heights. H&F 1908, the Frederick car, will serve the line from Frederick to Thurmont and Frederick to Brunswick. The Hagerstown car, H&F 1909, will serve the Hagerstown area, including Funkstown, Mt.Lena, Myersville and Middletown. The H&F 100 aniversary car will serve system wide.

In other news, the H&F has aquired rights to extend the Gaithersburg line to Rockville, MD. This will add another connection the M&N's commuter service as well as DC Metro. More Kawasaki LRVs have bee purchased for this extension and 3 more combines will built by the Frederick car shops.

A minor derailment occured this week. On Thursday, March 28, H&F 171 hit a loose railjoint just north of Middletown. There were no injuries to report, but 171 has sustained a broken leaf spring and damaged traction motors. The car was set back onto the rails and using the remaining motors, limped back to the Middletown station where a flatbed truck waited to take the car to the shops. H&F 50 will take over 171's duty for the next few weeks.

Freight service will be increased between the H&F and the M&N. A new furniture warehouse has opened in Frederick
and will have railservice from the H&F. This will add 2 more trains to our freight list. These will be pulled by our new GenSet locomotives, GG-20Bs #1 and #2, but cars will be switched by a M&N EL12SW light electric engine. The warehouse will open in 3 months.

"We are at the intersection of Market st. and Patrick st, running light from Thurmont. We didnt hit them, but there is an accident at the intersection that has traffic all tied up. Cars 170 and 1895 are here too, and cant get thru."
"Alright give me a few minutes, i need to figure out how to reroute all 3 of you around this."
"ok, #1 out."
"Car 170 here, I offloaded my passengers since i wasnt sure how long I'll be here."
"Car 1895 here, I did the same thing."
"Roger, I'll let you know the reroute, just sit tight."
"Will do, 170 out."

All traffic has been halted on the Brunswick Branch due to a blown transformer. This has cause a blackout in the Brunswick-Jefferson area and has stranded 2 trolleys halfway between Brunswick and Jefferson. 2 buses have been sent to pick up the passengers and GG20B #1 will pick up the trolleys.
