I used to see this one all the time, would watch it and others come into Fairport Harbor. Miss living by the lake.

Now if only there was a ship in it

For those interested, there is a nifty Great Lakes tracker at:

Not much out there now thanks to winter, but it might help time some nice maritime shots.

Go to St. Joseph in the Spring, when the water is cold and the air is warm. I have found that you can occasionally see the Chicago Skyline in the Spring when these conditions are present, usually April-early June.

These are from 6/2/11...from Silver Beach:

A little hazy, but this was is from 3/8/12 from the overlook along Old Lakeshore Dr. north of the B.L. 94 overpass over CSX.

The trick is getting there on the right day when there isn't any haze or fog.

Based on what I used to see when living in California, Sundays were the best to view the mountains from the Sacramento valley. By mid-morning on Monday, forget about it. Can the same hold true for the view of Chicago across the lake?

You might have a point here with any haze/smog Chicago creates.

Ya think? (by the way, the last sentence of my post was meant to be more of a rhetorical question)

My photos were taken in the evening.

BTW, I heard that Lake Michigan's water level has gone up 2 inches in the past month because of all the rain/snow/sleet etc. that we've had since late January.

Also, St. Joseph and New Buffalo will receive funds for dredging their harbors.

"Years of scant snowfall...has contributed to Lake Michigan's Low Water level"

Uhh...I'm quite sure 2010 & 2011 were well above average, at least in northern west Michigan. Even this year we're only about 10 inches behind currently. We've had over 2 inches of total precip more in the last 90 days than normal...

This is true, but most of the Great Lakes have had plenty of snowfall, especially with the last La Niña.

We have had practically nothing and I live 100 yards from the biggest tributary of the Great Lakes.

We had several inches of wet snow yesterday, and have had quite a bit of lake effect snow in the past several weeks. The first half of the winter was quite dry though.

Sunset Splash on a windy, March evening at Holland. (picture from Beach Bum Joe at ReportIt). See it full screen. Some good news. The water level of Lake Michigan/Huron is up 2″ in the last month. The level is still down 13″ year-to-year, but it’s now 4″ above the lowest March level, which was recorded in 1964. The lake level is 25″ below the century average (a one-inch improvement from last month)
Some good news, but -2ft since last year! Hopefully we can get out of the Mona Lake Channel for Salmon this year! Only about 18 inches of water last year

Driving over the Grand River at Wealthy Street today, and couldn't help but take a few pictures of the river level! According to the USGS, the river is doing about 25,000 cubic feet per second. Not quite flood stage at 17 feet, but nearly to the trusses.

Sorry for the so-so photos, best I could do from a moving vehicle and an iPhone :)

Lake Michigan was up two inches last week, but based on the water graphs on the rivers, should be up way more this week.
