I think this one sentence sums it up pretty well. This board works pretty well as is with the mod's just playing "janitor" now & then to mop up the occasional messes. One reminder for everyone is that this is an all ages board and we have some young members on here which is why we try to police bad language and anything that gets ugly - we want this to be a safe, friendly environment as much as possible without crushing all dissent with an iron fist. Basically let's play nice and all try to get along. Bullying specific members will NOT be tolerated though if it crosses that fine line between friendly joking around and hurtful attacks (with clean up and appropriate moderation to follow).

I don't mind the amount of moderation on here currently. I give the mods a "thumbs up" for their work.

I've seen forums where the mods (and it's rooted in board policy) shut down every thread that gets "off topic". I sometimes view one forum where up to 1/6th of threads are locked. If that sort of moderation was applied here, a topic about signals that turns to locomotives would be shut down.

Why not just set it up where if the member complains about how someone is treating them on the board then the moderater steps in. There could be a lot of kids on this site so a moderater enforcing language rules sounds like common sense.

Yeah, I have to admit it's funny how Matt blows up on one thread yet has no problems with another. He seemed to get real pissy with my comments toward the end of that thread. I even fired back at him (quite angrily) and it was deleted before anyone (including him) had seen it. I went as far as not caring if I was banned for the post because I had had enough of his pissing and moaning.

The comments I posted in that thread were not meant to be negative in any way and I hope you (James) understand that. I really do want MP25 Productions to get bigger and better. Apparently, Matt could not see the logic in those posts I made and it went downhill from there.

As for the issue of moderation, we definitely do need it here. I try to adhere to the "if it really doesn't interest you, then don't post in the thread". IMHO, that is the key.

As for the mods and admin, I wouldn't want that job for all the money in the world. Thumbs up to you and the job you do.

I thought your posts were fine :? You did not attack personally and offered your reasoning tactfully for declining to go. Business owners need that sort of input.

As long as you asked... :)

I think the interesting content here is diluted by playground whining and bad attitudes. Its a shame this isn't a more kid friendly forum. I believe some firm moderation is needed to cut out the belittling and irrelevant (not as in AAR irrelevant!). Delete the cuss-words, attacks and off subject comments and eventually members will get the idea and save it for the chat board. For my own part I'd sure like a more "grown-up" atmosphere here.

Well said. Not meant to impinge on the younger members either.

I'm an administrator on an aviation forum. While we have decided, by board decision, to lock a few threads that have gone far off track, we've never banned a member.

I just feel if we all act as adults there will be no problems.

I like it as it is.

I, like many other railroaders, have some passionate views on issues that I faced during
my career. I realize that I am not always right. Sometimes I am spectacularly wrong.
On this forum I feel that I can express my beliefs as long as I do it in one or two posts
and not launch an extended tirade.

I haven't been banned. Yet. As long as I remain respectful and type, then delete, hateful
posts I may survive.

I think things should be a little bit more controlled. Constructive criticism is one thing, but to out right dog someone for asking a question that might have been asked in a thread 4 years ago. This is a common thing I see. Someone asks about something and the first first post is along the lines of "maybe you should search, before you ask about something". Not everyone knows the fine details on how to actually do a good search for something.

As for the don't say anything is you don't have anything good to say, or think about what you are saying. This is all fine and dandy, but most people don't. Also, being the internet, you don't have an idea of how it will be taken.

Zero moderation would be the worst thing that could be done, IMO. Members have come to feel that when things do get out of hand, that something will be done or said. People will leave the forums, the very people that give much of the information or updates on things. Leaving only the few to flame each other.

I also think that adding an additional admin or two might not be a bad idea either.

EDIT: I also will add that saying someone isn't a railfan or less of a railfan because of activities that they do or don't do is very harsh. Calling someone "foamer" likewise, may sound funny, but some people don't see it that way. Foamer was a term started in the rail industry as a name for anyone standing or sitting just watching trains go by. That truthfully covers a vast majority it not all of the folks on this site...including myself.

So you want it to be a kid-friendly forum, but at the same time you want a grown-up atmosphere? Well, pick one, because you can't have both.

I'm now a firm believer that nobody under the age of 14 should be on this (or any) internet forum.

Grown-up doesn't mean you have to use cuss words. Grown up in the sense of how we treat each other and express out opinions in a mature manner. However, the age thing you mention makes sense. Fourteen or there a bouts is a decent age to ask decent questions and such.

Like our new trainmaster says, "We are all men here." And I add, "act like it."
No problemo.
And actually I really don't see much of a problem here at all anyway. I look at it like this...we get newbies that know next to nothing about railroads...can be annoying but how else do they learn? Tolerance is needed for so called DUMB QUESTIONS. So be it. Be tolerant and also remember you and me don't know everything anyway. I learn every day and come here to get info that even the guys at work have heard nothing about (nor do some/most care).
So it goes.
Book em Dano.

Agreed. My thing is treat people on the forum as you would if you see them in person. If John Doe came up to you in person as asked a question at a meeting, would you answer or ignore?

WE CAN HAVE BOTH AND HOPEFULLY WE WILL.

I AGREE WITH THIS FOR THE CHAT ROOM ESPECIALLY.

I think this board is moderated very well. Kudo's to Zack and his helpers. I agree that if a participant doesn't want to play nice, they get warned, continue not to listen, a ban may be appropriate, even permanent in the case of a few. Not sure how one enforces an age requirement on the internet. We all were 14 at one time, some us us never grew up . I would agree, if one can't say something positive, don't say it. If you don't like something or a statement, PM your concern to the Admin. That's worked for me in the past.

This! If you have nothing nice to say (or worth saying), keep your hands off your keyboard and go punch a wall instead.
