Discoverys off the beaten path

Postby wagnew0923 on Tue Jun 19, 2012 11:44 am

Has anyone here ever discovered an abandoned or forgotten rail car or locomotive. I thought I did once down by Adrian but it turns out it ws just storage for a museum. I got some great pics of it though.

Yes, years ago and not too far off a road. The tank car has been there for 30+ years with no rail connected. I was going to use it as a "where is it". I need to find the picture.

That would be the Annie RS1 #21 at Lenawee Junction that belongs to the Southern Michigan Railroad Society. My take on her: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.p ... 263&nseq=0

When i went there I asked the farmer if I could shoot the caboose they own. She did not know who owned the rest of the cars and the locomotive. So I took a lot of inside and out picks thinking they were just abandoned and the farmer did not want to move them

In my early foamer years I stumbled upon the abandoned-in-place Egyptian Line in western Indiana. I remember going crossing to crossing to see what was left for a good portion of the line.

One I've seen on many occasions is the "rail locked" Western Maryland boxcar in Sidney, Ohio at the elevator.

An Old Survivor by Built in America, on Flickr

About 10 years ago, on portions of family vacations to Indiana and New Jersey, respectively, we followed portions of the former Erie Lackawanna mainline. In Indiana there were still sporadic concrete mileposts in the ground and concrete phone boxes in place. I seem to recall seeing a signal bridge (with heads removed) and a dispatcher radio antenna. Various pieces of railroad infrastructure like bridges and fills were left untouched from when the rails were torn up.

In New Jersey we followed the Jersey Cut-Off in the rural northwestern part of the state that served as a high speed passenger route for the DL&W and was abandoned in 1979 by Conrail and torn up about five years later. All railroad infrastructure other than one bridge in Grendell still remain. Since the Lackawanna built nearly everything of reinforced concrete, very few depots, towers, etc. have been razed. Port Morris, Greendell, and Slateford Jct. towers on the Cut-Off still stand, as well as a couple depots. I don't recall seeing any signal bridges, however.

Here are the photos, to my knowledge they was along the back route from the CNW main at Sands Michigan to where the present day Tilden Mine is located. It may have been the line that once connected to the southern end of the mineral range railroad. Of course today the Tilden mine is in the way. The loading tracks at the Tilden actually follow the old grade and in the back corner you can see where it curved around to National Mine.

This entire area is about a mile long, then we lost the rails in the dirt/ fenced off area that said caving ground (that was a pretty good reason to stop our trek!)

Not really off the beaten path, but most people will never get the opportunity to see.......

Great pics everyone! Love this thread. Ypsi, so glad you got to explore the Saline tracks and thanks for your pics of the part that I didn't get to explore by the hair salon. I had thought a while back that there were more tracks on the other side of the road. Thanks for posting them! :D

Yeah I love checking those tracks out! Actually the first time I had gone down the trail. In the winter it is much easier to follow the ones across the road because there is no greenery

if you have pictures in the gallary you can copy and paste the message board code that looks like this:

Code: Select all
[url=http://railroadfan.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-66076][img]http://railroadfan.com/gallery/albums/userpics/11130/thumb_hilsdale_14.JPG[/img][/url]

then you will have to delete the thumb_ part for the picture to be not a thumb nail.

flicker you grab the HTML/BBCode
