Wedding photos on the tracks

Postby Michael on Mon Jun 18, 2012 2:09 pm

Every weekend there are people taking wedding photos in the downtown area of Plymouth but this past weekend I noticed a couple getting their wedding photos on the tracks. I was down at the depot (which would have made a better photo :D ) but I could see them way down to the East. I thought it was odd but of course my wife reminded me that I proposed to her by the tracks

Dave Lang had a wedding picture with his wedding party on a GTW unit in Battle Creek yard! It turned out really good. They drove there, got permission, and got the pic. 8)

Taking photos on the tracks for high school, weddings, ect has become a very common occurance lately.....needless to say, the railroads aren't happy...

And, MQT which railroad is it you work for?

This involves a 'holy sh!t' moment in recent memory for me. I am a CSX employee, and used my CSX switch key to gain access to a depot on a CSX line. It is/was used by MOW forces. I just wanted to see what the inside looked like after being taken over by MOW. No illicit intentions, just checking things out, but off duty. My heart sinks when I hear a car pull up. Then a knock on the door. I figure I'm busted. They come up to the door and ask if its 'ok' to shoot a girl's senior pictures next to the old doors on the freight house. "Oh, yeah, sure. I thought you were someone else." A puzzled look, and then they take their photos.

I should have asked for a copy, she was kind of cute.

Anyway, as long as they maintain 'situational awareness' that behavior is no worse than what I've done trackside as a kid, and seen trackside by other railfans. One of my favorite photos of my brother, my late grandfather, and myself 'faking' pointing at a train coming at us from behind along the Mississippi River near Potosi, WI.

Practice Safe CSX

A month or so ago, Fox News had a short segment about it (it was Senior photo season after all), and the piece included a clip of a Norfolk Southern person talking about the dangers and warning that they could be fined/arrested if caught by NS Police....

I think it's more than fine to infer NS dosn't want unauthorized photos taken of subjects on the traks or other RR property based on that report.

In MYHO, beside the tracks is OK. On the tracks is definitely unsafe.

If that girl looks like a 12-year-old to you, then a true 12-year-old must look like a 6-year-old to you.

It's amazing how many pro photographers know that it's trespassing and yet they still shoot on the tracks....to the point that it has sparked many a long debate in photo forums.

It has become the most over-used shot now, when it comes to shooting h.s. seniors. Very cliche.

Honestly, I really don't give alot of respect to some of those studios because they are trespassing and they know it, just like you said Mike. I guess they'll risk it for money.

An incident with a photography studio and a train coming happend last summer with me in Northville. It was at the Baseline Road Crossing (Just south of the 8-mile overpass) where a studio was taking senior pictures on that well-known C&O boxcar between the CSX and the cider mill. I went to the crossing to see Q321 where I saw two photographers in the process of taking senior photos with their tripods and other gear along the outer rail and the photographers were shooting while standing on the tracks. I told them a train was coming as the crew was calling the 9 Mile Road signal on my scanner. They kept saying they had a few more photos to take of the student on the boxcar, then the train was coming under 8 Mile Road and I kept b***ching at them. It wasn't until they heard the horn that they grabbed their equipment and got off the tracks. The train crew blew many short horn blasts until the head-end cleared the old boxcar. Somewhat of a close shave, but they were idiots and they knew it was a bad idea.
