Aloha Rail

Unread post by Ypsi »

Not a well know fact, but the owner of the AA (Me!) also owns another railroad, Aloha Rail on the Big Island of Hawaii. The Aloah Rail railroad was founded in 1983 and has built its own ROW on the Big island of Hawaii. (from what I know a tsunami destroyed most of the origional railroads in Hawaii
But the end was near for the Hawai'i Consolidated Railway. Early in the morning of April 1, 1946, a massive tsunami struck Hawai'i. A tragic loss of life occurred in several low-lying areas of the island chain, the east side of Hawaii island were hit the worst. The railroad line between Hilo and Pa'auilo suffered massive damage; bridges collapsed, trestles tumbled, and one engine was literally swept off the tracks.

from: http://www.thetrainmuseum.com/history.html )

So in one april first 1983 the ground breaking of Aloha Rail took place. The line is primarly on the eastern half of the island, with competidor Hawaii Certral Railroad (founded in 1984 as compition to Aloha Rail) operating mostly on the western half of the island.

The Current Map looks like this:

The Red is My Aloha Rail and the Purple is the Hawaii Centrail Railroad who is owned and operated by the state of Hawaii. Both RRs offer freight and passenger service and are constantly compeating for business

Roster, paint schemes, train numbers and what not to follow soon.

Do the volcanoes often damage your railroad?

The main base for operations is out of Hilo Hawaii, there we server a port and have a direct connection with the air port for passenger trains. the Hawaii Central RR also has trackage rights into Hilo. From Hilo Aloha Rail heads North, West, and South.

Naalehu Division
South takes you to Pahoa where we have a branch to serve another port, then we head wouth west towards the shore. After heading toward the shore the RR heads back north through the town of Volcano and then southwest again. The RR then goes to Pahala and then to Naalehu. Finally it starts to head back north where our line terminates and we interchange with Hawaii Central

Central Branch
West of Hilo is the central branch. we do not use this branch for freight trains but Hawaii Central RR does, they use it for trackage rights into Hilo where they drop cars at the port and can interchange. Aloha Rail uses the Central Branch for Seasonal passenger trains though.

North Shore Division
The North Shore division gets its name because you follow the shore most of the way around the northern part of the island. North from Hilo you go to the cities of Honomu, Lapuahoehoe, Paauhau, Niulii, and after rounding the northern most part of the island you come to Kawaihae where our line ends and the Hawaii Central starts.

Time tables to come soon
