Heads up for anyone North of Cadillac

Postby AANscaleRunner on Wed May 16, 2012 4:45 pm

GLC rolled into Cadillac around 3 PM with 2 loaded centerbeams and 2 black tank cars along with the usual assortment of coke and sand hoppers. They could be headed north tomorrow or Friday. Didn't catch the numbers on the locos, I was too far away to read them.

Thank you for the heads up.

Does anyone know if Magnum Solvents in Kalkaska moved? I have not seen the usual collection of tanks on the siding at the north end of Kalkaska the past few trips through.

MS started out in Gaylord. Later they switched to Kalkaska. It's possible they moved again.

Thanks for the Heads up. I did happen to catch them is TC today. Just like you said two center beams. Not great pics but here are a few from today:

Unloading at Amerhart:

I guess this is why they can't do a normal run around in Williamsburg. The tracks end pretty quickly after the switch:

looking the other way at the abandoned right of way:

getting around the cars:

saw this in Cadillac the other day. Also notices about 4 pole cars at the place in Manton again.

Also as far as I know the tanks are still being unloaded in Kalkaska. Usually 2 or 3 on the siding lately. Sometimes the will pick up emties without making a drop and the siding will sit empty for a few days. Here they are north bound with just one tank for the Kalkaska. This was maybe 3 weeks ago? I guess things may have changed since then.

KVERBERK, I think your shots are great. Sometimes the most interesting railroad photos are in place such as industries or sidings, where there's more to the story than just the locomotive. That being said, great to see an old Tisbee colored Annie geep still running around northern Michigan. I always enjoy your updates! GREAT to see Amerihart getting service and keeping that part of the old C&O in service!

There was a hi-rail truck checking the line north of Mancelona on Thursday. They may be heading to Petoskey Friday.

Ditto

The place in Manton appears to get serviced maybe once every month or two or something like that?

Here is a shot of the siding on the north side of Kalkaska this afternoon. (5/18/12) with 3 tanks and a hopper.

I would imagine the covered hopper will go north eventually to Mancelona or Petoskey. However, since both sites transload it is possible they could transload from Kalkaska too :? One "railfan rumor" is because traffic is so low north of Klakaska and both sites transload they could move those cars to Kalkaska or Clare.

Thanks Kyle. I travel through Kalkaska nearly every week. I had not seen any tanks for a while.

I do not think Petoskey Plastic would be too interested in moving their transload. There are typically 6+ hoppers staged in Petoskey. I suspect that the cars act as inventory with several different types of pellets kept on hand. When they make a batch of one product the truck only has a 10 mile round trip to pick up pellets. Pretty hard to walk away from that.

I also learned from a City of Petoskey official that once they obtain ownership of the ROW in downtown Petoskey, a single car trolley will be put in service to move people from parking lots on the south side of downtown to the city center, The "trolley" is gasoline fired and has rubber tires that drive the car along the tracks.
