Q321 and 501 5-1-12

Postby atrainguy60 on Tue May 01, 2012 6:33 pm

I went out today to catch Q321. It didn't take long to see it coming in Grand Blanc. I went to Belford road in Newark to catch it.

After that, I headed over to Swartz Creek to see if there was anything on the Flint Sub. I followed the Flint Sub to Durand, and saw 501 in the yard. I went to the Union Station, and the first two engines dcoupled from a BNSF and some cars in the yard, and then went around the wye. It then stopped just east of Newberg Road crossing. Here's the video of it going around the wye:

It does not have as many cars as I would have thought :?

I think they load quite a few bagged beans in the thumb and thats what many of those rag-tag 50' box cars have. there is a type of bean, IIRC, that is fragile and do not load in bulk because they will break or something like that.

I'm not sure, but if I ever catch Q321 or Q322 on the bridge north of Newark sometime, I'll try to remember to look to see if there is scrap steel inside the hoppers.

Those appear to be from the fleet that CSX uses for scrap tie pick up.

Atrainguy, the wye in front of the caboose in Durand is the Port Huron wye. The one that crosses Ann Arbor St. (which goes to the depot) is the High wye. The one from the Holly sub westbound to the Flint sub is the Chicago wye.

Nice videos of 321 and 322..I see 322 has two of those 89 footers for tower and a lot tankers. I also notice that 321 is longer on days that 322 is short and vice versa.

Nice videos of Q321. Heads up though..CSX is starting to do crossing work this month on that part of the sub. They're working on the crossings at Evans, Lahring and Quick Rds. Intersections will be closed for about 2-4 days each. Here's the dates: Evans Rd. 5/14-5/17...Lahring Rd. 5/21-5/24 and Quick Rd. 5/23-5/25.

The ones in the video look like mostly HESR 20xxxx series boxcars. Might've been an IATR or SMW car or two in there as well. The bean plant would be on the north side of Pigeon. They used to have a big John Deere switcher...

I've wondered for a long time where those boxcars went, I haven't seen enough of them going through Durand to account for the fleet of cars that they keep in and around Pigeon.

I hear ADM continues to load bagged beans in box cars in Elkton. With all the elevators in the thumb it would not surprise me if there is at least one or two other locations that load box cars.
