D&M Track Rehab.

Postby Sppengelly on Sun Apr 29, 2012 9:37 am

Does anyone have any information about the history of this? I thought the line north of Millersburg to Cheboygan was abandoned by 1978. Why would D&M and MDOT want to rehab the track if business was poor?

IIRC the Huron Sub was considered the mainline until early 1980's. All those box cars of paper and diapers took the Huron Sub until then.

Also, the large gravel pit near Millersburg shipped by rail until about 1984 or so, again if IIRC.

I've seen some pictures of box car trains on the Huron Sub and that was the reason given.

D&M expert Ron Cady's 1992 Trains article states that the northern 40+ miles of the old D&M was last used in 1979.
