After the Sunday/Monday shutdown in Observance of MLK Day, some interesting power rearrangements have taken place.

325 left Lima with TPW 3830 leading TPW 3821 and 66 cars, 30 for Findlay with a 27 car pickup there.

320 had LTEX 8593 paired with HOSO 4045 today with 71 cars, 34 for Findlay with a 40 car pickup there.

300 left Toledo with TPW 4056 leading NECR 3845 and SGLX 5005. They had 100 cars, 28 for Findlay with a 21 car pickup there.

331 left Lima with SGLX 771 as the sole power. 60 cars all for Upper Sandusky. A new crew boarded the 771, and returned to Lima with 44 cars running LHF. This is a new operation being tested by the OBRR to eliminate the need for more power. This is a week long test and will conclude Friday. If management likes the result, they could begin doing this daily as soon as March. If this does happen, the most likely candidates to be returned are the GCFX units.

Went down to Lima before sunrise to see what was moving around. 325 left Lima a little early this morning, and I saw them rolling east at 7:59 a.m. with TPW 3830, NECR 3845, SGLX 8324, and SGLX 2667 with 91 cars. Followed them over to Findlay and watched them drop off 40 cars, and lift 44, so they left with 95 for Fostoria. They had a block of racks at the end of the train for the Mixing Center.

While watching 325 work in Findlay, I heard 303 talking to the dispatcher about getting clearance at Dunkirk. They would have to wait for 331, also running fairly early today. Got down to Dunkirk in a hurry, arrived with minutes to spare before 331 rolled east. They had HOSO 4045, and SGLX 6307 with 54 cars for Upper Sandusky. 303 got the signal a few minutes after 331 was clear, and they proceeded north with LTEX 8593, NREX 7364, and SGLX 2676 with 80 cars. I then followed them back up to Findlay. They dropped 18 cars and lifted 12, leaving Findlay with 74 cars.

I was thinking about heading home, but more scanner chatter caught my attention. The CFE was in the yard at Lima, dropping off 40 cars for the OBRR to take to Dunkirk. Got over just in time to see the CFE complete the move, with FEC 505 and CFE 3836. The 40 cars were windmill parts, going to the new project site in Dunkirk. LTEX 7310 and 9912 were idling at the fuel rack, so it was a safe guess that those units would take the windmill train east at some point. I didn't have enough time to hang around for that, so I left for home.

Found my way down to Lima this morning to see 325 roll out of Lima with NECR 3845 and SGLX 8324 with 44 cars. On the way home, I stopped in Bowling Green to watch 303 roll north with LTEX 7310, NREX 7364 and SGLX 6339 with 90 cars.

Yup, everything on the OBRR is mixed freight unless otherwise noted.

Which reminds me, a coke train is planned out of Toledo tomorrow. Going to the WLE in Lima.

Tomorrow is looking like a rather busy day for the OBRR.

A loaded coke train is called for 07:30 out of Toledo with HLCX 5998 and HLCX 5971. They will have 120 loads for the WLE in Lima.

The CFE has an empty grain train that we will take from Lima to Toledo as well. Should leave Lima around 10:00. The only extra power down there is SGLX 6311 and SGLX 5000, so I'm guessing that will be the power.

The yard crew in Fostoria put together train 320's power tonight, and it's a rather interesting lashup. SGLX 8324, NECR 3845, NS 3401 and NS 3397. Both of those NS units are in Conrail paint. This is the first time NS power has found it's way onto an OBRR train out of Fostoria. They will leave the yard with 132 cars, 48 of them for Findlay.

325 will have TPW 3830, SGLX 5005, and HOSO 4045. Their train is only 30 cars out of Lima, but they have a 54 car pickup in Findlay with a drop off of only 4 cars.

Re: OBRR Activity

I was able to move ahead of the snow this morning... made it to a friends in Lima by 4:30 a.m. to catch some OBRR operations in the snow.

Heard some scanner chatter around 7:30, figured it was 325 getting around in the yard... the road was freshly plowed but with snow still falling hard it was no easy 3 mile drive. We arrived at the east end just as the road crew boarded the lead unit. With a heavy train, 325 required 5 units. OHNR 7726, TPW 3821, OBRR 5458, LTEX 7310 and NREX 7364 had 104 cars in tow as they plowed through the snow at Cobalt Street.

Figuring we had some time, we made the drive down to Dunkirk to get 303 on their journey north. Upon arrival, we were surprised to find train 334 sitting east of the diamond. Apparently, an extra crew was called early to try to get them into Lima before the snow hit. Obviously, they didn't make it. After a few minutes, 303 came around the curve at Noble Street and rolled across the diamond with NREX 7360, LTEX 8858 and SGLX 5005 up front, and 64 cars behind them. 334 got the signal shortly thereafter, and they rolled east with NECR 3845, HOSO 5103 and LTEX 9912 with 44 cars.

Knowing that 303 would be slowed due to the snow, we ran up to Findlay. We arrived just as 303 slowed to a stop at the Harrison Street signals. 325 was already working in the yard. While sitting in the car, we were surprised to hear over the scanner that SGLX 6307 was bringing an extra train of racks to Lima. Perched on the Clemens Avenue bridge, we watch as SGLX 6307 and 6344 led 60 racks west. A short time later, 303's power took their 14 car drop off north across the diamond, and then backed them around the wye and into the yard. By this time, 325 was ready to depart, and they left the yard with 102 cars.

Hearing that 300 was working their way south, we drove up to North Baltimore. 300 was rolling into the siding as eastbound CSX train Q11009 rolled by with CSX 5421, CSX 7614, and CSX 424 with over 8,000 feet of train in tow. 300 was in the siding and stopped as the last cars rolled by and they would now wait for 303 to continue north. 300 had TPW 3830, HOSO 4045, LTEX 8593, and SGLX 6340 with 69 cars.

We were done dealing with the snow for the day after that.

Looks like tomorrow is going to be a busy day for the OBRR.

There is an empty ore train running from Lima to Toledo. It will leave Lima around 10:00 and be ready to head north at Findlay by 15:00. Power is scheduled to be NREX 7360 and SGLX 6344, with 100 empties.

Grain loads will run south from Toledo to Lima for the CFE. Power is HLCX 5971 and HLCX 5998.

320's power is showing as OBRR 5458, NALX 5592, and SGLX 6340. They have 60 cars out of Fostoria, with a 3 car drop off and 27 car pick up.

325 is listed as having LTEX 9912, NREX 5481 and TPW 3820 with 81 cars. Work in Findlay will be a 19 car drop off with a 22 car lift.

300 will leave Toledo in the mid afternoon with OHNR units 7726 and 7713 plus 38 cars in tow. They have no work in Findlay.

303 is being annulled tomorrow. It will run Tuesday.

340 will also be annulled on the Dunkirk Sub. 331 will do double duty, running to and from Upper Sandusky. Power is NECR 3845 with 20 cars for Upper Sandusky. They will come back with 18 cars according to the computer.

Train 343 will do the same as 331. They will run to and from Bucyrus. Power is LTEX 7310, with 31 cars for Bucyrus. The computer shows them as having 46 cars on return. If it's sunny I may go try to catch that move. The 7310 would be running long-hood-forward on the return trip.

More details on the incident in Bowling Green this morning...

Southbound OBRR train G300 struck a Semi hauling gravel at the Napoleon Road crossing, shortly after 10 a.m. The train was traveling around 40 mph when the incident occured. The train pushed the truck about 1/4 of a mile south to the the County Road 324 crossing, where the truck finally came to rest on the west side of the tracks. The train stopped about 1/8 of a mile south of there. The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries and was taken to the Wood County Hospital. The crew of the train escaped uninjured. The apparent cause is that the truck became stuck on the tracks when the driver took the turn out of the Toledo Molding & Die company area too sharply. Just moments later, the train came. The driver of the truck has not yet been charged or cited for the incident.

The lead unit of G300, HLCX 5971, sustained severe damage to the front and conductors side. It will be returned to HLCX for repair. The 5998 was undamaged, but both units remain on the TM&D siding in town. The grain cars were taken south by NALX 5580, SGLX 2667 and SGLX 2669. Trains 300, 303 and E495 (ore empties from WE) were annulled. Tomorrow's 300 and 303 will be combined consists with today's traffic.

The first week of Intermodal shipping on the OBRR was a success.

Beginning on Monday, operations over the former CFE from Lima to Chicago, and the former NS from Fort Wayne to Muncie will begin. Plans are in place to add signals to certain locations, add and lengthen sidings at others, and establish a dispatching system for the line. For now, everything will continue to run by track warrants through dark territory.
