Operations over the Bluffton Sub between Fostoria and Lima begin today. Road freight 320 departed Fostoria around 2 this afternoon, while 325 arrived in Fostoria by noon.

325 departed Lima with SGLX SD40-2 6307 leading SGLX SD40-2 6311 with 42 cars in tow. 31 of those cars were dropped in Findlay, and their pickup was 17 cars, so they should be departing with 28 cars for Fostoria.

320 departed Fostoria with SGLX SD40R 771 and LTEX SD40-2 9912 with a 56 car train. 18 of those cars were dropped in Findlay, and their pickup is 16 cars, so they should leave Findlay with 54 cars. Most of those cars are going to the CF&E.

Local 511 will be worked to Bluffton today with 30 empty grain cars for loading at the co-op. Their power was SGLX GP50 5005 and CFE GP38-2 3886 which has been borrowed until another four-axle can be brought down.

Then you should like us! Most of our trains are general freights, aside from the unit rock trains and grain trains. Every now and then (usually not more than once or twice a month) we will handle a unit ore train south from Toledo to the W&LE in Lima.

Good news for the OBRR, they will have a new industry that will generate lots of revenue. International Paper Company has bought the land necessary to build a new plant south of Van Buren and Mortimer (North Findlay interlocking with NS) that will be one of the largest plants owned by International. More to come.

325 has cars on the ground in Bluffton. I'm hearing some of the rail rolled under the train. Not sure how many are on the ground, but the derailment started about 40 cars back in the 61 car train. I'm guessing the train was only doing about 20 mph through town. The power was LTEX SD40 7310, TPW GP38 3830, and SGLX SD40-2 6307. No further details at this point.

320 is waiting for all this to clear up at Cobbs Street in Findlay. They have NECR GP38 3845 and HOSO SD40-2 4053 with 55 cars in tow.

More updates to come.

Update on the derailment in Bluffton.

Made the drive down to check out the site, and talk with a friend who works for the OBRR. He told me first car to derail was the 39th car back, and cars 40-52 also derailed. 4 of the cars involved were Hazmat cars, but all were empty. The cause of the derailment is definatley a broken rail. The train was traveling at 23 mph at the time of the derailment. No injuries are reported. It will be at least 36 hours until the line can re-open. The power of 325 took the first 38 cars that did not derail into Findlay and after doing their work there, continued to Fostoria. The 9 cars at the rear of the train that did not derail have been shoved into the elevator track in Bluffton, and will go to Findlay on Monday's 325. Train 320 is parked in the passing siding at Cobb Street in Findlay and will make the rest of the trip to Lima once the line re-opens.

RJ Corman crews worked into the midnight hour to clean up the derailment. The ROW is mostly cleared but a large section of track will need to be repaired tomorrow. I don't expect 320 to be on the move again until 1 p.m. and it will probably stop east of Bluffton before it proceeds. I'll head down in the mid morning to check it all out.

ROW has been cleared and new rail is going down. 320 completed it's work in Findlay and is now parked east of Bluffton. A Lima local crew will be called to complete the run later in the day once the the route is open again.

320 made the first run over the wreck site today around 6:30 p.m. Currently, a 10 mph speed restriction is being placed over the repaired stretch of track.

The Lima crew that was called to take the 320 into Lima didn't sound too happy when they were onboard. Tomorrow's 325 will pick up the undamaged cars from the rear of Saturday's 325 that are in the elevator track in Bluffton and take them to Fostoria.

When 320 got into Lima tonight, a CFE crew wyed the power on the Ford Park wye. HOSO 4053 was having problems with the fuel intake system and will be dead-in-tow to Findlay, where it will get dropped off. NECR 3845 will be the lone power, and the Lima Yard crew cut tomorrow's 325 in half because of it. They will only work to Findlay tomorrow, and the 3845 will return light power to Lima. Another road unit will be sent to Lima sometime tomorrow to assist Tuesday's 325, which will probably be rather large now. The HOSO unit will go to Toledo on Tuesday's 303 where it will either be repaired, or put out of service for the time being.

NECR 3845 lead a 36 car 325 to Findlay this morning. The 3845 is currently parked at the west end of the yard, waiting for TPW 4056 and NREX 7364 to arrive from Toledo on southbound 300. Those two units are dead-in-tow, and will be used with the 3845 on tomorrow's 325.

Also, an extra movement out of Detroit will run tomorrow. X008 will run with SGLX GP60 8324 and 60 empty autoracks from Detroit to Findlay. After being shoved around the wye and into the yard in Findlay, they will go to Fostoria on Thursday as X011. These cars were previously being stored in Detroit.

X008 arrived in Findlay around 4 p.m. and was tied down in the yard before 5. The train will remain there until Thursday when it will go to Fostoria.

325 was bigger than I thought it would be today. Lots of cars from the CFE. NECR 3845 led, followed by NREX 7364 and TPW 4056. They will return to Lima as 320's power tomorrow.

Tomorrow's 325 will have TPW 3830 and SGLX 6307 tomorrow. LTEX 7310 was dropped in Findlay today and will go south to Columbus tomorrow.

Perhaps a sign of good things to come, a loaded potash train will run from Toledo to Columbus on Thursday. Not sure what the power will be yet. The train will be 80 cars, and will be interchanged to NS in Columbus.

320 was held up in Findlay for an extended amount of time today while doing their work. Came into town around 3 p.m. with 108 cars, dropped 30 and picked up 13, and just as they were ready to leave a crewman discovered a locked switch. Took the maintainer awhile to free up the switch, but they got out of town a little before 6 p.m. Had NECR 3845, NREX 7364 and TPW 4056 with 91 cars in tow.

325 also had some issues in Findlay today. Sometime around 8:30 this morning a drunk driver went off road at Putnam Street, knocked out the crossing gates, and ended up getting his car stuck on the ROW. A pedestrian reported the accident shortly after it happened. Unfortunately for 325, they were held at Hardin Street until everything was cleared up. They didn't get their yard work done until well after 10:30 this morning. They had SGLX 6307 and TPW 3830 up front. Came into town with 76, dropped 16 and picked up 28 more, for a total of 88 when they left.

X011 (the autorack train that was X008) is called to depart Findlay for Fostoria at 05:00 Thursday. They'll leave with the same consist as before, SGLX 8324 and 60 empty racks.

The potash train (now symboled X020) is called to depart Toledo at 08:00 Thursday. The two HLCX SD60's (5971 and 5998) will be the power for the 80 car train. 5998 should be up front.

Those are the only two movements scheduled for tomorrow. Nothing will run on Friday, but business will resume Saturday. There may be a train of empties to get loaded with ore in Toledo on Sunday, but other than that nothing should run on the 3rd.

Monday the 4th will bring a new chapter into the OBRR story. Operations will commence on the former PRR Fort Wayne line from Lima to Crestline. See the last 3 posts here for details: http://www.railroadfan.com/phpbb/viewto ... 7&start=20

X011 got out of the yard in Findlay before 05:30. Had to wait at Arcadia for 2 NS westbounds, and then again had to wait in Fostoria for 1 CSX eastbound. Got into the yard shortly after 08:00.

X020 was out of Toledo before 08:30. No obstructions for them at Galatea. They just cleared South Wayne Street in Kenton and will stop at the yard in Kenton to pick up SGLX GP40-2 6207, which is going to Columbus.

Nothing else moving today or tomorrow. Traffic will resume Saturday.

300
LTEX 8572
LTEX 8593

SGLX 6344
SGLX 6339

TPW 3821
SGLX 2660
SGLX 2667
SGLX 2664
SGLX 2676
SGLX 2669

64 cars for Toledo
Findlay pickup is 12 cars

320
TPW 3830
SGLX 6307
7 cars for Findlay
57 cars for Lima
Findlay pickup is 11 cars, along with the four units set out by 300 and the 6 units set out by 303

So, tomorrow looks interesting for the OBRR. 320 will have 12 units after working Findlay. Those units will go to Lima, and some will be sent on to Upper Sandusky on Sunday as light power positioned ahead of the official start of OBRR service on the former Pennsy.

Today was the first time official OBRR moves over the Dunkirk Sub occured. Here they are.

331 left Lima with SGLX 6339 and NREX 7364 and 76 cars for Upper Sandusky and beyond. Had some trouble in Dunkirk though, they were held up for about an hour while MOW crews did some work on the diamond. Southbound local 504 got held up too for awhile. They were going to Kenton to switch around town.

334 left Upper Sandusky with SGLX 6347, SGLX 6311, and SGLX 5005 with 131 cars for Lima. They were held at the west end of Upper Sandusky to allow the late 331 into the yard. Other than that, smooth sailing for the crew. They were into Lima by 16:00.

343 left Upper Sandusky with SGLX 5000 running solo and 42 cars for Crestline. No problems for this train either.

350 left Crestline with SGLX 2667 and SGLX 7210 with 50 cars for Upper Sandusky. They are currently stuck in Bucyrus. A broken rail just west of the diamond is being repaired and they should be on their way by 19:00 tonight.
