Well depends on your definition of rare I guess. Here's a few things I can think of off the top of my head:

NS - EMD High hoods of all kinds, 10 SD9-M's, some GP49s and GP59s I think

CSX - Their rebuilt GP30 and GP35 road slugs. Still a few SD40s, GP40s, and SD45-2s hanging on. A number of B30-7s and B36-7s, but their numbers are dwindling. They also have the bulk of the remaining GP39s and GP15T's, as well as MP15T's.

UP - Some B23-7s remain in service, I think. Anything else "rare" will probably have fading paint and be exceedingly dirty lol.

BNSF - they probably have the best stuff left. Former ATSF blue and yellow GP7s, GP9s, GP30s, GP35s, GP38-2s, GP60s, GP40s, B23-7s, and warbonnet wide cab GP60s. Former BN SD9 high hoods, and rebuilt versions of GP30s and other geeps into GP28Ms and GP39Us and GP39Ms.

CN still has a bunch of GP9s, and also GTW's GP9Rs. They've got others too but I'm not familiar with them.

Hope this helps!

Hate to refute ya Gregg, but:
Yes, NS SD9M's 50-59, except for 52 and 57, have just been retired. The 52 and 57 are to be retained, as those two were converted as remote control platforms earlier this year and are assigned to Pavonia Yard in Camden, NJ.

I didn't realize ANY of them had bitten the bullet, but it seems just a couple remain.

No, unless they are headed for Woodcrest, those SD38-2's will most likely stay in Canada. There are 4 SD38-2's, not 3..all are active and woking in Edmonton..stats:

CN SD38-2's 1650-1653

CN 1650-built as Northern Alberta Railway #401 "Peace River" in 1974, to CN in 1981 and repainted/renumbered to 5700, renumbered to 1650 in 1996.

CN 1651-built as Northern Alberta Railway #402 "Pembina River" in 1974, to CN in 1981 and repainted/renumbered 5701, renumbered to 1651 in 1996.

CN 1652-built as Northern Ablerta Railway #403 "Athabasca River" in 1974, to CN in 1981 and repainted/renumbered 5702, renumbered 1652 in 1996

CN 1653-built as Northern Alberta Railway #404 "Smokey River" in 1974, to CN in 1981 and repainted/renumbered 5703, renumbered 1653 in 1996.

NOTE: The NAR (Northern Alberta Railway) was purchased by CN in 1981.

Neat thing about those GTW GP9R's..they all ride on their original frames, and the long hoods they have now are the SAME long hoods they were originaly built with back in the 1950's! The only change made to them was the removal of dynamic brake blisters and 'torpedo tube' airtanks on the roof, on units so equiped.

Other "rare" unit's on class 1's....
CN:
a fleet of GMD-1's (Canada only switchers)
CP(SOO):
GP40's in Milwaukee Road paint (called bandits)...while not rare in terms of locomotive model, how long has it been since the Millwaukee Rd was purchaced by SOO? Some MP15's in the same paint.
BNSF :
GP28P's Actualy GP9's rebuilt with GP38-2 components.
A small fleet of exATSF SD39's
A small fleet of SD38P's..SD35's rebuilt into SD38's
SD45's & SD45-2's (whats left of the fleet)
SD9's
Some GP7/9U's still running around as well.
CSX:
Some of their old GE's still pounding the joints, plus those SD45-2's they got from Conrail (exEL!) and the couple of SD38's (which also came from Conrail)
NS:
Those SD9's, plus some old CR SD45-2's and those B39-8E's and the largest fleet of C39-8's in the world. Oh, and those C40-9's!

Not long ago (maybe a few years), NS had 2 or 3 SD9M's working the Bellevue yard.

CSX still has GP39's, and GP38-2S. Also 3 GP60s.

UP's last DRGW SD40T-2, and their CNW stuff.

UP stuff...oh boy...
Anything in SP, CNW, or DRGW paint.
Lemme think..what is that huge honkin' diesel UP has...OH YEAH..the DD40AX (6936)..and a steam engine or 2..and a set of E9's.
Then there is the UP 3300 "United Way" SD40-2 (Currently working between Proviso Ill and Butler Wisc as of 4-14-2007).

Im thinking of applying to BNSF rather than CSX for a diesel mechanic job. BNSF has all the cool old stuff to play with. :P
