Here's some good archived info on R337 and other old trains on CSX: http://www.railroadfan.com/phpbb/viewto ... =9&t=11712

R336/337, later Q336/337, were Chicago to Flint (Saginaw?) and return via Grand Rapids.

If I remember correctly 336/337 were BRC/Clearing to Saginaw trains. Most of their traffic was from Dow in Midland and auto related traffic from Saginaw and Flint.

Pretty cool hearing the engines notch up and down.

So CSX was still heavily invested in Saginaw and McGrew at this time? Thats a hell of a run from Flint to Clearing...

336/337 lasted well into the 2000s. Flint didn't really go completely to crap until the closing of Buick City and the Great Recession.

Until the 2000s via GR you had 326/327 as Chicago-Detroit trains, 334/335 were Chicago-Toledo and 336/337 were Chicago-Flint. All had scheduled crew changes in GR. These trains all had predecessors going back to the C&O and PM of course with different numbers and symbols.

All of these trains would recrew in GR.

Here are the symbols for the manifest trains running when I first started dispatching in Saginaw. This, of course, does not include locals, road switchers, coal and grain.

Here's a link to a pdf file I created of the whole Chessie (C&O) S&C book, if anyone is interested:

Great post Doug. Thank you. Books from the late 70's have eluded me. I see at this time C&O and B&O still maintained separate books. Any idea when they combined into one book? Also did Chessie ever have a binder for their freight schedules from the 70's-80's or did they just use a plain 3 ring binder?

Regarding S&C books -- don't believe C&O and B&O ever made it into one book. The only one I ever saw was the one I posted and was kept in the chief dispatcher's office. Cover is complete with coffee cup stains and other smudges! I can still detect the aroma of cigarette ash on the original, as well! Chessie, of course, got the requisite eyes, nose and smile! The first consolidated issue that I know of was after CSX changed most all of the train symbols in 1987 and to strictly numeric. CSX first used the "R" prefix for manifest trains. That was later changed to "Q".
