Steam Scrapped in Michigan after the Steam Era

Unread post by MQT1223 »

I was reading some reports regarding some steam locomotives that were sold off or donated after their careers were over only to be scrapped at a later date for various reasons. Can anybody shed some light on these reports:

New York, Chicago & St. Louis (NKP) (ex W&LE) 2-8-4s 6402 & 6410
Berkshires 802 and 810 (ex-W&LE 6402, 6410) were sold to McLouth Steel in Trenton MI in November 1959 for stationary boiler duty. They may have survived into the late 1960s before being torched.

A Detroit Edison 0-6-0 was once on display in Champaigne Park in Allen Park, MI. This engine was steamed into the park from off the DT&I in the mid-1950s and used as playground equipment. It was cut up by the city in June, 1970. It was similar to engines on display in Marysville, MI and at the Illinois Railway Museum and at the Toledo, Lake Erie and Western tourist line in Grand Rapids, OH.

Anything would be appreciated.

PM 1227 was offered to city of Grand Rapids for display in John Ball Park. The city backed out and the engine was scrapped.

NKP 6402 is said to have been scrapped in 1967 in Trenton with NKP 6410 being scrapped a year later in 1968.

Unknown about the Detroit-Edison unit though.

On a similar subject, the old PM 1223 that's been staged in Grand Haven is said to be getting moved for some new condomiums that are being built alongside the Grand River. City said it had better use of the property due to falling tax revenue and wants to recoop some of their recent losses. US Steel in Gary Indiana is in negotiations to buy the unit. Supposedly going to take the boiler off to use for a high-pressure steam cutting operation, while the rest of the unit will be parted out.

As far as I know however 1227 was never removed from New Buffalo. Still a shame.

I've heard of 1223 wanting to get moved in recent years, however I doubt it will ever be used for the reason you state.

Now that is the biggest piece of foamer crap I have heard in a very long time. You can buy a brand new or rebuilt industrial boiler certified for less then the cost to move and re-certify/repair an 80+ year old riveted boiler. Nobody in their right mind would want a coal fired boiler that has been sitting in a park for 50 years rotting out. The only reason this was done in the 40's and 50's was they were plentiful sold at scrap prices, still in certification, and the railroad would usually deliver it for free or for a very low rate to get it off the property.

And BTW you can't cut steel with steam very well. Water jets are much more efficient as they can carry an abrasive. The pressures that are used in water jets are on the order of 30,000 PSI only 100 times the rated pressure of a 300 PSI rated steam engine boiler.
